would have been totally impassable on a road bike

I struggled through it on a Chdot tour (TM) once on 25mm tyres. Like all his best tours it seems best handled on a Moulton.

In those days just about anyone could hire 'plant'!

That slope is still a bit steep and turn quite sharp - check the skid marks when you visit...

Readers might be interested to know that Spokes originally built this path.

Back then, it was a rough, overgrown single-file walking track through fields, with a very steep section at one end.

With nothing more than volunteers, a tiny budget, a mini digger and a dumper truck, Spokes made the gradient 'cyclable' on an ordinary bike, widened the path, and improved drainage.

CEC should take note: Start by creating new routes NOW - cheaply, quickly and where needed most. Tarmac and fancy lighting can come later.

Yes, I recall 2 years ago I really struggled to deal with the path even on a fairly stout hybrid, would have been totally impassable on a road bike. Checked it out again a few weeks back and was startled to find the nice tarmac instead. Startled in a good sense for once :)

Last time I was along that way (about 3 years ago) it was the most appalling rubbly surface, barely rideable. Must check out the new path at some point.

Ya.

Then Brunstane Station (footbridge or detour) and either signed path (middle section whin dust - mostly good nick, though has been known to wash away) or along Daiches Brae and continue on unnecessarily rough short link towards newly surfaced path.

It's nearly 3 months old, but today was the first time I'd ridden it.

Very nice two metre path from near the end of Daiches Brae to Brunstane Mill.

http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/37313378

So almost continuous tarmac (and mostly downhill) from the Engine Shed to the Forth including a fair chunk alongside the Brunstane Burn that forms the border between Edinburgh and East Lothian when it reaches Eastfield.

Looking back up the path - left goes to Newhailes House.

Where the BB joins the Forth.
