Heard two adverts about being nice to people on bikes on the radio recently.

One was from the point of view of someone sounding female, talking about how frightening a close pass is and how the police are running Operation Close Pass. Notably through this advert it never once said 'cyclist' but instead talked pointedly about people on bikes. Rather good, actually.

Second was from ambulance-chasing lawyers. Started by talking about cyclists running red lights and riding on the pavement, then morphed strangely into saying that if you're a cyclist and have an accident we'll get you the compensation you deserve. Tone deaf approach, and marked them out as lawyers to avoid.

Apologies to anyone who doesn’t think that this is an appropriate thread to add this to.

The contrast between the NWC campaign and this more focused one is notable.

I hope this one actually works -

“

The Scottish Government agency’s latest advertising campaign is aimed at urging male drivers aged between 20 and 29 to slow down on country roads and be better prepared for unexpected hazards such as bikes and deer.

“

https://www.scotsman.com/news/transport/watch-young-drivers-gran-climbs-out-crashed-car-berate-his-driving-3016809

(P.s. I read the first few posts of this thread again. Curious nostalgia and NO feeling of ‘we were a bit harsh on the SG and its agencies’!)

So its gone.

I suspect it's not as though something awful happened to the NWC machine, but that it's actually part of the planned closure of the material. Will Cycling Scotland or the Scottish Government be publishing information about how successful the NWC was? And how do they actually measure 'success'?

I think it was fair enough, he gave me a straight answer:
LB is paid to carry the NWC adverts
&
LB recommends people follow the HWC.
which to me means that the NWC is not LBs official policy.

Lothian Buses depot manager never fails to give it the "Being a cyclist myself" spiel, in correspondence.

I fail to see the relevance, but he seems to use it as a convenient buffer, and an adage to cement whatever he's saying.

I wrote to Lothian Buses 4 weeks ago asking specifically about the Nope advert on their buses & just received the following reply from the depot manager:
"
I can confirm that related adverts are being carried on-bus through our advertising partner CBS Outdoor. This is a normal “paid for” campaign. Cycle safety initiatives do not fall into the category of advertising that requires our prior approval.

Lothian Buses has had a long association with “Streets Ahead Road Safety in Edinburgh and Cycling Scotland in the promotion of cycle awareness and safety but we as a Company would never presume to tell any road user what to do in any circumstances, all we would advise is to follow the Highway code.

Being a cyclist myself I would endorse any campaign relating to the promotion of cycle road safety however, as with all advertising it has to be legal, decent and honest at all times. "

Remember that ad a while ago where a few Kiwi youths are at a party talking about drink driving? It set the internet on fire thanks to its popularity, and now there’s an even better follow-up featuring kids urging folks not to drive while high. The results are hilarious.

The new ad sees three kids sitting in a car comparing how their fathers drive while high. It’s an incredible sketch of kids comparing stoner behaviour.

“Who’s this cheeky fella,” one kid asks while messing with the rear-view mirror. “Looks just like me!”

“Which street do I live on again?”

“Light’s green bro.”

One of them even takes the wheel off to give to the other. I’d honestly rather watch this two-minute stoner comedy out of New Zealand than Dude, Where’s My Car?.

Check it out, it’ll make your day.

Just received this response (as a PDF) from Sarah Boyack, dated 17 Sept.

-----------------
Firstly apologies for the delay in replying to your email about the "Nice Way Code" campaign and road safety for cyclists on our roads network. I have long-campaigned for increased resources on sustainable transport issues, particularly cycling and walking. I am aware of the letter that went to the First Minister and I am looking forward to seeign the terms of the official response to the valid points made.

In the meantime, I can say that I and my colleagues in Scottish Labour have reservations about the current approach of the Scottish Government, particularly about the campaign's tone and the lengths gone to ie changing the lyrics to the "Wheels on the Bus" song and
gestures in advertisements. The points you make deserve to be addressed by the Scottish Government and I will continue to lobby for renewed focus on spending priorities for our road network within the transport budget.

Let me know if there is anything in particular that I can do for you, now or in the future as your Regional MSP in the Scottish Parliament.
---------------
And there's a handwritten note: "I'll be discussing this at the next meeting of the Cross-Party Group on Cycling tomorrow evening".

We set out to get people talking about how we can make our roads a safer place for everyone. And we've certainly done that.

Actually I've seen their funding submission and it's not what they "set out to do".

It also angers me that they claim it as a success that they "started a conversation", when it's a conversation that was going on long before they blundered up to the table with nothing constructive to offer. If that's the best they can salvage then it really is an indication of what a massively ineffective waste of close-on half a million pounds this was.

"
Our posters are now more or less down. Our last press ad has run. We're happy to report that printed supplies of our Nice Way Code are running low. And the slideshare version made it into slideshare's top presentations in the week of our campaign launch.

A big thank you for all of the support we've received from our stakeholders. And a bigger thank you to all of you for your comments, observations and sharing of our messages.

We set out to get people talking about how we can make our roads a safer place for everyone. And we've certainly done that.
"

Are people talking about making our roads safer or are they talking about the quality of the campaign. Two very different conversations...

Aye they asked about the NWC telly ads at the end of the online survey for the PfS challenge ride too. It's being run by Progressive market research. I also gave them a piece of my mind regarding the NWC ads!

Well spotted Hank.. I've also filled in my NWC feedback now. It's a long survey before you get to the one page about the NWC, so hope others have the patience to see it through to the end too. It will be interesting to see if this is the main route for Cycling Scotland to measure the success of the campaign..

I got asked for my views on NWC as part of the post event survey from the Pedal for Scotland Glasgow Family Ride a couple of weeks ago, which I think Cycling Scotland had a hand in.

It felt a bit out of place after asking about the booking process and the availability/choice of catering outlets....

Maybe this is the independent research study.

I took the opportunity to let them know my thoughts. ...
