Not Keith Brown. His diary will be so full that, unfortunately, he will only have time to give a keynote speech saying we're spending £58m on cycling before having to rush out of the venue to his waiting ministerial car. So, no time for questions after the speech and certainly no time for him to sit on a Question Time-style panel. No, siree. He'd love to be able to, but when you're Minister for Veterans as well as Transport your feet barely touch the ground...

"Wearing two hats is not difficult for those who are in two minds. Or have two faces." - Yes, Minister (BBC).

@Kim - agree, it's quite clear they're looking to make it significantly more of a sedate affair by taking it 'in house' with a tried and tested speaker list.

I felt last year's conference was actually quite good and can't help but think the Govt were slightly surprised by it's success in terms of numbers of attendees and media coverage.

Given the amount of conferences I could go to for work and which Ministers attend for really no broader awareness or outcomes than those present on the day (sometimes not even then too!), I can well imagine they are keen to have a slightly more controlled event with less risk of contrasting opinion from pesky interest groups.

I guess we'll just need to make sure we don't give the mike back to Penny Taylor.

"The Road Safety Scotland Annual Seminar"

Went to one of those once.

Only thing I remember was a Road Safety professional brusquely telling me he wouldn't let his daughter cycle to school.

That didn't seem too unreasonable - 6 miles on a rural main road.

But the 'anecdote' coloured his attitude to all Safe Routes to Schools initiatives.

The Road Safety Scotland Annual Seminar in Dalmahoy Oct 23-24 might be more interesting and certainly isn't all male speakers.
Includes:
Vulnerable Road Users: A Case Study
Prolific Illegal Driver Behaviour
The Role of Social Marketing in Road Safety: A Case Study
Speed Policy in Scotland
Drivers’ Resistance to Road Safety Messages (tbc)

Well after last year they obviously feel the need to play it safe, after all they would want a repeat where that Dutch woman told them exactly what she thought of Edinburgh brand new Quality Bike Corridor. Her open words where "In the Netherlands we don't build crap like that". Who was she, oh yes, Her Excellency Laetitia van den Assum The Netherlands Ambassador to the to the Court of St James, so she was obviously being diplomatic in her description of QBiC.

No they won't risk any form of criticism, just self congratulation and niceness...

I have already tweeted about the line up of men in suits (not just all men, but all politicians and officials - no likelihood of us learning anything new). Got a reply back saying it was just a 'save the date' announcement and there would be more speakers. Apparently Brenda Mitchell (of Cycle Law Scotland - campaigning for Strict Liability) may take part 'in some form'. Needless to say, nobody from POP has been invited, but you'd have hoped someone from Spokes or GoBike Glasgow or ED cycle Coop or anyone might have been approached...

PS - an improvement on last year then, where he gave his speech in a pre-recorded video - featuring the state of the art QBC! I can tell you that all the cycling experts over from Holland were...erm...had certainly never seen anything like it before.

"
riday, 8th November 2013 - Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Glasgow

Cycling Scotland is pleased to announce that this year’s Cycling Scotland Annual Conference will take place on Friday, 8th November at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.

We are excited to confirm the following speakers for the 2013 conference:
Keith Brown, MSP, Minister for Transport and Veterans, The Scottish Government
Cllr Frank McAveety, Glasgow City Council
Andrew Gilligan, Cycling Commissioner for London
Craig Burn, Chief Executive, Scottish Cycling
Ian Aitken, Chief Executive, Cycling Scotland
John Lauder, Director, Sustrans Scotland

Not only do we have great speakers confirmed, there will also be workshops and site visits to see some of the new cycling infrastructure in Glasgow, the Bikeability Awards and the return of last year's popular Question Time Panel.

So please save the date in your calendars and keep your eye out for further details and registration information soon

"

Ooh look 6/6 men.

That's Transport (and cycling too, too often).
