<description>&#60;p&#62;I don't have my copy in front of me but Tom Vanderbilt includes this analysis in his 'Traffic' book.  The conclusion was that humans with a large degree of freewill are essentially non-altruistic in their acts, and therefore the efficiency of (transport) networks is always intrinsically non-optimum, and why traffic jams 'happen'.  &#34;Why should &#60;em&#62;I&#60;/em&#62; make my journey take more time just so &#60;em&#62;yours&#60;/em&#62; can take less?&#34;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I think Vanderbilt also makes the comparison with ants, who operate with more of a hive mind and miraculously don't get into traffic jams.
