For spectacle I think it would need a city centre start and finish. I believe that Edinburgh's bid for the Tour is still on the table, perhaps that could provide an opportunity.

If only we could have something like that around here, a gruesome bash around the Lammermuirs say, a big mass participation ride followed by a pro race perhaps with the finish at the top of the Royal Mile. Oh well, in my dreams.

I was watching the end of the BBC version. Unlike TdF coverage, they had very poor coverage of who was where, largely because the filming of the peloton was poor. So the commentators struggled to know which of the sprinters was being set up for the big finale. Also at the end there were extensive aerial shots of London rather than showing the excitement of the sprint build up.

I didn't notice any poor camera work, and it was good to have a choice of no less than 3 commentary teams - Kirby & Backstedt on Eurosport, Brotherton & Hayles on BBC1, Porter & Smithy on the red button. Not sure what happened to the red button, they appeared to suddenly switch to swimming without warning.

The filming of critical parts of the men's race was poor - just as for the Olympics

They seem to have an interesting formula by adding on the public participation bit, which should reduce general antipathy a bit. Big crowds too.

Can't say I find the route particularly enthralling though. The proposals to turn next year's second Yarkshire stage into an annual pro race should produce a more entertaining race given its Ardennes-like profile.

It'll be interesting to see if the race lasts. It's hard to establish a big race in such a busy city - especially in a country that doesn't have established top level bike races.

Well that was quite watchable. Perhaps they need to put it back a bit after the Tour to get the big names, but certainly the nucleus of a good event. And great to see Boris and friends completing the leisure ride preceding it, looked like quite a festival.
