@Fimm - sadly, my parents are wiley devils who negotiated harsh terms. Plastic hat to be worn on commute and 'longer rides'. Failure to comply will result in 'disappointment and worry'. The old emotional blackmail in full force...

@DaveC - this evening's washing up will be used to test that possibility. However, I have a truly massive head, so I might have to strip out all the padding.

Probably deserves a #firstWorldProblems tag

I think LEL might have been the tipping point. There was an assumption that big events would require plastic hats. I elegantly and concisely explained why this was not the case, citing a number of peer-reviewed articles and utilising the bleeding edge of medical investigation.

Despite being a long term non-helmeteer, I've just acquired a Catlike Whisper after the constant nagging from my parents was followed by a birthday Wiggle voucher attached to a very pointed email.

I'm already mentally picking out the many faults it have compared to my well loved Rapha cap, but can report that having worn it for the duration of a washing up session*, it wasn't that unpleasant.

That probably doesn't help anyone else at all, but you know. There we are.

*look, I wanted to try it out for a period indoors in case I want to send it back, and the washing up needed doing. I did get some funny looks from people outside, but I'm used to that.

I've just chosen and bought mine in the sales - Garneau Quartz II. Seemed comfortable in the shop and can fit a cap under as well. As worn in the peleton (by Voekler). £80.

I recently faced having to get a new lid as well and I went for the cheap and cheerful option. Specifically the Bell Ukon for £20. It's not that pretty, and I'm sure compared to many it's not 'aero' either but it's pretty comfortable over several hours and reasonably well ventilated.

I have a Specialized Echelon in stealth black, to which I've added lots and lots of stealth black reflective tape. In my experience people's heads are either Spesh-shaped or Giro-shaped. Just try them all on and see which fits best. Not much to be gained by spending more than about £50.

If I was buying one now, and it turned out to be comfortable, for sheer looks it would be the Catlike Whisper.

Really? I think it looks like a collander & I've got one! I'd recommend one because they are really well ventilated & cool, but they are a little bit above the WC price spec.

I'm also looking for a helmet so thanks for asking WC.

My previous one was a Spec Aurora - it's no longer as aerodynamic/effective as before.

When in use, it did tend to leave an imprint on my forehead.

My other helmet for commuting has a mesh on the front part to stop bees etc. This is a useful feature that it would be nice to see on the pricier helmets with better airflow. There's nothing like the panic on trapping a larger bee or wasp-like insect in your helmet.

A few weeks back I took advantage of an EBC helmet amnesty (actually I think just a Specialized promotion). In return for my (definitely past it) old dome, I got a Specialized S3 for under £60 (was 100+ at the time, I think, and I guess the promotion is over). Been very happy with it though, it has a nice adjustable retention system, and light with good ventilation.

I've got a MET Estro (another crap name!) - wouldn't particularly recommend it.

PROS
-Has protected my head from road rash when I've fallen off at speed. Alas not my face which got mashed. Couldn't possibly comment on the efficiency of impact reduction *ducks*

CONS
- I find the rear tightener uncomfortable after an hour or so, plus gives you a bonus klingon forehead mark.
- The aero shape at the back makes a strange sound at speed which makes me keep looking round for an overtaking car
- I keep getting bees stuck in the front holes (no really!)

Please keep any helmet 'debates' to the thread set up especially. I do genuinely need one as it's a requirement for participation in the Bealach Mor.

I've got a Spiuk at the mo, but just occasionally find that the fore to aft fit is a little tight (side to side is fine). Had a brief look at Lazer helmets at the Haughcross and they had a neat retention system that seemed more 'all round' the head, so didn't create pressure points. Bearing in mind I'm going to be wearing this for 6+ hours I'm after a combination of lightness and airiness with comfort. And sub c.£75.

Bear in mind I WILL seek out to try on any helmet first in the nearest convenient stockist, so not buying blind, but some indicators could come in handy (that's an indication of a good helmet, not flashing orange things on either side of the helmet).
