Classic BRAKE, years behind the game!

I'm sure it was the RNIB who did a survey back in the early 2000s and discovered that about 30% of drivers who don't wear glasses, should be wearing glasses.

The IAM in central scotland raised awareness by getting a deal with local opticians to provide free eye tests (before the gov made them free) to IAM members.

Next they'll be telling us that the driver assessment when you reach the grand old age of 70 isn't fit for purpose....

People are constantly told that they have a right to drive and that their licence is a sacred item which will not be taken away from them no matter how badly they drive, or at least that is the way it seems.

Realistically we need to have tighter enforcement of the law, driving with impaired vision is an offence, but how often are there prosecutions following collisions? When there are the judiciary are all to often over lenient in their approach (when compared with other life threatening offences).

If we had a law of Strict Liability, the victim would at least be in a better position to receive civil compensation, although it would not affect the criminal prosecution (quite rightly, people would still be considered innocent until found guilty) and it could also make people think more carefully before getting behind the wheel.

The husband of a colleague of my wife was hit by a driver in East Lothian who, it was found, should have been wearing glasses. And wasn't. He was turning into Muirfield, there was CCTV, but apparently only caught the cyclist 'flying through the air'. He suffered a bad head injury (was helmeted) and has trouble concentrating now (he's a partner in a law firm, it's a bit of a drawback not having concentration). As far as I'm aware nothing has (yet) happened to the driver (this happened a few years ago).

Just don't understand people knowing they can't see properly still getting behind the wheel.

Drivers are ducking eye tests with some who need glasses at the wheel often declining to use them, says a survey.
