I would've snapped a photo but it was pouring with rain. Hard to tell at this stage what the end result will be, but the dug up area would make for a generously wide bike path, especially as it's likely to be one-way. He might have built Hanover Street a few more metres to the west. </em> ;)</p> <p><strong>Non standard bike trials x 2</strong></p> <p>Took my Furai recumbent with 23mm narrow tyres on 24" rims to see how it worked crossing tracks. Basically I stayed to left hand lane till I wanted to do right turn. I noted how narrow it seemed at RSA and cobbles at tram stop.</p> <p>At Frederick St (eg) you have to be far left in right hand filter lane (aka the tram lane and the overtaking lane for fast buses). That is to say I found it best to keep well clear of tracks so that you get enough angle to cross both rails safely. If you go between tracks then not much room to move and also bad habit to get into I think. Right of the tracks and you're too close to central reservation.<br /> <strong>I know the ASL has been painted over tram lines but maybe not a good place to cycle!<br /> </strong><br /> I came back over at Mound and followed the white lines sitting far out in the traffic. Too far left and you may run out of space in front of RSA to turn sharply across tracks.</p> <p>Darren also tried a Brompton (which could be even more prone to wheel snatch). Obviously this manoeuvre means cyclists would have to re-mount in (potentially very busy) traffic.</p> <p>Anecdotal evidence on this issue was posted on a different forum recently. Apparently CEC's requirements differed from those set out by tie's designers, and there was the intention for cyclists to be able to turn left with some sort of 'across the footway' and 'behind the pedestrian crossing' arrangement, and a caveat that the building works did not yet reflect CEC's request.</p> <p>Perhaps a dropped kerb or two and some magic paint will be forthcoming. Or do we have to fight for this to be restored like the famous missing bike lane on George IV Bridge?</p> <p>Can understand that a right turn up Mound may be somewhat tricky now. </p>
