That Bordeaux-Paris jersey looks superb, @WC. Happily, they haven't got my size in.

I seem to have acquired a moderate number of Rapha merino base layers. They're brilliant. Wear them pretty much constantly throughout the colder months, both on and off the bike. Very long, so tuck in securely to whatever you're wearing.

Certainly spendy.

I've only gone and bought a merino t-shirt for £40. I must stop reading this forum, it's getting expensive!

I've got long sleeved merino base layers from both Decathlon and Icebreaker. Icebreaker look and feel better when you pick them up but I've found surprisingly little difference in their performance in use.

I have four or five icebreaker merino wool items from liquidation specialists, leckies of Falkirk

I know I previously stated that all only in size medium but my friend phoned me from the emporium as he had discovered their heaviest jacket in large. Would have been lovely but too big

Yesterday I spotted some very thin looking merino in decathlon hillwalking section. Cut looked snazzy, merino looked very thin

Aldi also sell some itchy merino for peanuts. Might try it as itchy I can cope with and if it does not honk after use that is what you are after if it is also quick drying

Bit like when the amount of extra virgin olive oil in the world exceeds number of olives?

For my birthday I was given another merino Base layer from Canadian Costco. Labelled made in Canada http://www.coapparel.ca/segments.php.

The merino baselayers seem almost reasonable - you can easily pay that amount for merino on something without the brand cachet. Anybody got any experience of them? I was expecting their merino to be extremely spendy

Wouldn't encourage them. All that money for stuff, to go on a bike? I grumble at the cost of 'mainstream' cycling etire, I bought this years short sleeved tops at the end of summer season sale from Evans last year, £55 for three cycling tops, expensive!

Horses for courses.

I've got two Rapha items. The Bordeaux - Paris jersey easily fits better than any other jersey I have (as kaputnik pointed out on the airshow ride, I must have a long torso because every jersey ends juuuuuust too short - except the Rapha).

And three-quarter troos that have stood up impressively to my off, and are roughly a gazillion times more comfy than Endura, Altura and Co-Op options I've tried.

Sorely tempted by their 'city trousers'; sadly the rain jacket, which had a huge amount off, is out in all but teeny sizes. Can't really afford to splurge on more (and really want a Café du Cycliste jersey I've seen).

I have some dear bib shorts from decathlon and tried on the FDJ team jersey claimed made by them for the tour team of the same name, 'twas like gossamer. Then I have lots of cheap stuff from them that seems fine
