First day of winter so I thought I would humour myself with a count today (also there was an amazing sunrise all the way along the canal, apropos of nothing).

There were 43 vs 11 on the canal, and 81 vs 17 on NEPN.

And 72 vs 34 this morning, thus hugely more busy, which I shall put down to the fact it was not raining and mildly pleasant when I left around 07:45 (but was then pissing down at 08:20, catching us all unawares).

Really? It was only 10mm in the space of 7 hours. In October, we had 70mm in 16 hours. Now *that* was wet!

Counted cyclists vs peds on NEPN from Roseburn to Hawthornvale yesterday morning during the heavy rain, only 34 vs 22. But the weather must've played a massive part in that.

Hmm. I usually see them just by the Victoria Park turn-off and they weren't there either, but there were children amassing at St. Mary's on Leith Links and my neighbour's kid was sitting in their car wearing school uniform, so not sure what's going on. Didn't look like there were any post drop-off jogging-parents at Ravelston today, either.

Another bitterly cold day - starting to feel like winter. 47 vs 13 on the canal and 63 vs 35 on NEPN.

I was running late today due to discovering a leak in the bathroom refit while enjoying my morning ablutions, so I half expected a lot more cyclists, but actually it was mainly the number of peds that went up: 38 vs 10 on the canal.

For my own amusement I decided to count NEPN too (starting again from zero) and got 68 vs 36. Surprisingly a higher proportion of pedestrians on NEPN than the canal.

I used to expect around 100 riders on NEPN in the summer, so I'm not sure if that means numbers have held up OK or not. Depends on your perspective.

Massive fall in numbers this morning to 34:9

Strangely I saw the same number of people in shorts, short sleeves and no gloves as before. Made of sterner stuff than I!

Re-fitted a headlight to my commuter last night but haven't needed it yet. After three years I decided I could retire the faithful Cyo and have popped on a new Philips from stores.

Highlight of the day: strange train which appeared to be steam cleaning the rails, I passed him around about the bridges. Slow and noisy!

I'm normally on the NEPN after 830AM and there are plenty perambulists around, but I'd say a good majority of these are either "walking" their dogs (by which I mean they and the dog are in loose proximity to eachother and heading in the same general direction albeit using unpredicatbly different routes) or out to wear their leotards and carry water-filled dumb bells around.

Have you tried walking along the canal during peak cycle commuting times. Can be more unpleasant than cycling in heavy traffic, which at least is slowed down by the weight of its own congestion.

Personally, I'm not surprised people are finding other routes.

I thought it would be interesting to continue my count of peds and bikes.

I've been doing this for a while now, as holding a few numbers in my head stops me thinking about anything in particular while riding.

Consistently on the way into Edinburgh in rush hour I count fewer than 10 pedestrians on the canal versus 20-30 riders, and on NEPN around 20 pedestrians versus 60+ riders.

Remembering I largely count cyclists going one way, the true difference might be double.

The disparity in numbers is even more dramatic now the clocks have changed. Yesterday on the canal there were just 2 pedestrians and ~30 riders when I travelled home during the evening peak.

It's pretty nice and quiet. About a kilometre between peds in the morning on average... I can't imagine bothering with the main road over the towpath now.

Probably be singing a different tune come spring, when the fast bike wants an airing.

allebong - the "flying bike" sign in your photo really does mean "shared use", i.e. bikes and pedestrians have no "side" of the path. There is a similar blue and white sign with bike and pedestrian side by side, which means segregated path.

I can't ever see anyone getting into trouble for nipping on to the pedestrian side of a segregated path for a short while, as long as you can reasonably say that you were doing so to avoid a collision.

"It's equivalent to asking why a motorist, stuck behind someone walking in the road, didn't just overtake by driving along the pavement"

the use of the pavement by motor vehicles as an extension of the roadway is all too common in my experience.

I actually don't think it's the equivalent at all, it's an arbitrary white line painted there by some council wonk, with exactly the same path and surface on either side. It's much more like crossing into the opposite carraigeway to pass, you aren't "meant" to drive on the wrong side of the road, but you have to do it if you want to pass.

Based on my calculations, a family car (I picked a Ford Focus) "cruising" at 30mph has c. 61 times the kinetic energy of a bicycle (I used my own bike and weight) cruising on the cycle path at 15mph. Same cyclist would need to go at 85mph to have the same kinetic energy of a car at 20mph. The two are completely different scenarious when it comes to the risk they pose to other road users, it's probably why 100% of pedestrian deaths, and 99% of serious and minor injuries between 2004-2010 on Edinburgh's roads and pavements were not caused by bicycles.

And don't get me started on poor path layouts that actually force you to cross the line unless you have some sort of magic powers of transmaterialisation.
