I wish they would get rid of them, I also wish people could be trusted to behave themselves with out them or other forms of traffic handholding so until then I guess they're the least bad option.

There are streets where the height of the speed bump is total overkill, Hutchison for example, any vehicle capable of achiving 20mph would be destroyed by attempting such a feat, only thing I'd go nearly so fast on that estate is a mtb, road bike has to brake nearly as far as a car.

to be fair, i recently lived near a village which had, at the time, a 30mph limit and a mix of built and natural speed restrictions (bends, narrow parts, a chicane at the entrance to the village meaning those entering didn't have right of way.)

they'd also decided in install speed bumps, and the only way to go over those safely was at 5mph--bit of a shocker to anyone on their first visit.

i have a hard time believing that was the best choice for traffic management.

Coil springs can break for any reason. E.g. because they get stone chips on the paint & then go rusty, weakening them. Nothing to do with how many bumps you’ve been over

A friend who has a small car and is a conservative driver has required coil springs replaced three times in the past five years.

Strong evidence, I think, that they are, indeed, necessary. I wonder if the author's definition of "conservative" is the same as mine.

Cllr Scott Douglas' register of interests reveal that he is paid as Head of Broadcast + Online Media, Scottish Conservative MSP Group, The Scottish Parliament.

So he must be skilled in the black arts of fake news. Hence his misleading and trollsome question no doubt. This is part of a Trumpian style attempt to paint blatant falsehood as the truth. Hey, if it worked for the Bath Conservatives, it can work for him, right? Why invent a new falsehood when you can simply recycle old ones to muddy the waters a bit?

I note from the register he also owns 14% of the family business which Companies House reveals is engaged in property rentals and running a caravan park in Loanhead.

Not so much trailer trash then but the son of the Laird of the trailer trash.

Bax San, I recommend Golden Rum, e.g Havana Club Seven Year old ( though if you get into the genre there are others that are better from Nicaragua for example but the best I ever had in Diggers one Xmas where the very drunk barman was asked the following question - There isn't a full measure left in that bottle after my quarter Gill had come out, what you gonna do? Drunk Barman answers, give it to you for your Xmas. was a Havana Club 15 year old, £140 A bottle. The reason for suggesting is you can drink grape and then switch to this rum without too big a hangover.

Armagnac I also feel not too harsh if mixed with claret on Burns Night. For example, no hangover to blame for my bad behaviour in Soderberg this morning at what we still call PY despite name change.

I stick mostly to modest quenchers as Dickens would say these days.

Question from Conservative councillor Scott Douglas for next week's council meeting:

http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/download/meetings/id/56007/item_59_-_by_councillor_douglas_-_20mph_scheme

"Is the Transport Convener aware of the reports regarding the 20mph scheme that had been introduced in Bath and North East Somerset, where one year on there has been an increase the number of people killed or seriously injured in seven out of the thirteen zones where 20mph was now the standard speed limit?"

Hopefully the response will be "if the Conservatives spent less time trying to appeal to EEN commenters and more time looking at evidence then they would know that the Bath report has already been thoroughly debunked and its conclusions shown to be inaccurate."

http://www.20splenty.org/banes-report

actually... (this is re: weight of traffic rather than speed per se, but very likely it will have an impact - plus the danger of traffic seems to be a fairly big factor in this effect).

Can't find article right now, but there was, I think, a US bit of work that found similar re: the number of social interactions on otherwise similar residential streets.

Loneliness is no joke re: health outcomes. Human beings are intensely social creatures: this is not a "squishy feeling" that can be ignored.

Ah, loneliness. The cause du jour. It must be combatted. Presumably 20mph is better for people's mental health too? Cures cancer perhaps?

Why can't Cllr MacInnes just stick the actual. real benefits of lower speeds which are primarily about safety. There may be some benefits to congestion and pollution too as (in theory) traffic is progressing at a steady speed rather than constantly accelerating and decelerating.

...is there any evidence current 20mph zones have
"encourage more people - especially young families - to walk and cycle; they also boost local communities and combat loneliness" ???

not sure i see a mass of cyclists and people out chatting to each other every time i enter and exit 20mph zones.

just another sound-bite politicians and the like can quote when they are asked "what are they doing to promote active travel/active kids/obesity/street pollution/climate change" type question.

apologies but i'm so very cynical about all politicians these days.

Councillor MacInnes is quoted thus;

Calmer speeds not only improve safety and encourage more people - especially young families - to walk and cycle; they also boost local communities and combat loneliness

Councillor Macinnes seems not to have been asked if gyratories have these same benign effects.
