"Mind you an electric vehicle at a standstill will be effectively off? Or will it? "

Yes... unless the driver is using a heater, lights, stereo etc etc!

Anth We're already there on the half hour to drive through the city aren't we???

The commuter challenge seemed to confirm that. Unfortunately it also showed that our good bus system is often slower still. Most cities would have opened or increased any existing rail capacity (ie - The south suburban).

Is sobering to think that Edinburgh has got a long way to go in terms of increased car ownership. Ownership in Amsterdam is higher for example but the difference ends there as they find cycling as natural as putting shoes on.

In one way it will only make cycling an even faster option. No doubt the masses will opt for hybrid or electric vehicles and be delighted to sit in huge lines going nowhere.

Mind you an electric vehicle at a standstill will be effectively off? Or will it?

I used to find it quicker to cycle from Newington to the Bush estate in the mornings that it was to drive, that was going in the opposite to the bulk of the rush hour traffic, and mostly up hill.

Even at minimal traffic levels (say, on a Sunday morning) it takes me 25-30 mins to drive from Bellevue to Straiton or Fairmilehead (unless I were to somehow fluke all the traffic lights, which has never happened).

Coincidentally, it also takes me 25-30 mins to get from Bellevue to Straiton on my road bike...

"it will no longer be possible to drive through Edinburgh without taking half an hour to do so"

That needs some kind of definition wrapped around it to avoid it being entirely meaningless.

"Edinburgh tram boss Jeffrey calls for political courage"

"
Howard Johnston, of Rail magazine, said: "At the rate of increase of car ownership in Edinburgh, we are going to see that in five or 10 years, it will no longer be possible to drive through Edinburgh without taking half an hour to do so.
