Ah you wouldn't like Aikwood Tower in Selkirk then. Both off route and now a posh guesthouse. The original owner Michael Scott was 13th century wizard. David and Judy Steel may still own it or back to duke of buccleuch. Now there is a man who likes to own a castle. You could do a borders tour of his houses ending at drumlanrig

“Kafka, in everybody’s life there’s a point of no return. And in a very few cases, a point where you can’t go forward anymore. And when we reach that point, all we can do is quietly accept the fact. That’s how we survive.”

This Saturday I have a notion to take in a fair few of the surrounding castles that we are spoiled with:

Craigmillar -> Crichton -> Hailes -> Tantallon -> Dirleton -> Edinburgh.

Crichton castle is within 20 miles of Edinburgh, so if you're pressed for time or not sure about your legs, it serves as a good peeling point. It's also pretty ace.

Any suggestions as to equally boss castles which are broadly along the route are welcome, but I'm fickle and care little for country houses with Castle in the name, so I might pretend I haven't heard you.

This comes to around 65 miles of riding, so an 8am start in the car park at Craigmillar Castle ought to give plenty of time for the wandering, cafe stops and pictures.

I don't actually intend to go into Edinburgh Castle at the end, but it serves as shorthand for a central location that people can peel off as the group(should one form) approaches.

All are welcome, none shall be dropped.
