Transprt Scotland has laughably tried to shoehorn in "improvements to cycling infrastructure" to the upgrade of the A8 between Ballieston and Newhouse to motorway standard. I can't even begin to imagine what they are talking about

Ah, so maybe my son was right? They are building a cycle lane! ;-)

The Audit Scotland report looks into Transport Scotland's handling of the five major infrastructure projects (EGIP, Borders Railway, Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route, Forth Crossing and M8 Completion) - cycling doesn't really come into it. Transprt Scotland has laughably tried to shoehorn in "improvements to cycling infrastructure" to the upgrade of the A8 between Ballieston and Newhouse to motorway standard. I can't even begin to imagine what they are talking about - although I'm sure just enough token effort will be invested so they can claim some cycling success for the best part of half a billion pounds spent on another roads project.

Scotland's exactly the sort of place where you would expect they put some blue signs up alongside the M8 and claim that the hard shoulder is a "quality cycling corridor". Probably against the flow of traffic too!

That's it.

Yeah, depressing isn't it.

On the coach to Glasgow yesterday for PfS I noted work was progressing on widening certain sections of the M8, presumably to three lanes each way.

My son enquired innocently (unprompted I may add) "Are they going to build a cycle lane?"
I replied "It would be very nice if they did, wouldn't it? But I very much doubt it."
"Why not?" came the inevitable response.
"Because, unfortunately, the government doesn't really seem to care about cyclists."
"Why?"
"Because most people drive everywhere and so the government just looks after the majority. It shouldn't be like that, but it is."
