Everyone has to start somewhere?

None of them would turn up too regularly if things were described as very private with absolutely no media attention possible?

He also made a point of attending the cycling debate.

And encouraged our MSP Kezia Dugdale to attend, and now ask questions about cycling in Parliament. (she'd not owned or ridden a bike before that).

Some credit is due.

@srd, still not convinced. As I said, he's my MP and ( similar to crowrivers Keith brown comment) I remain unconvinced that its more than a photo op for him.

@SRD, I see what you mean but consider this: Keith Brown turns up at Pedal for Scotland every year and cycles a couple of miles. Does he deserve more credit than Mark Lazarowicz? I don't think so!

@nelly i'd say give him some credit that he's willing to go a bit outside his comfort zone. my sense is that he really does appreciate the principles behind why cycling is good. and that he also appreciates that it is something a lot of his constituents care about.

you might even argue that he deserves more credit for trying than someone like Lazarowicz who cycled long before he was an MP?

@Nelly, unless cycling really quite a long way or going up lots of hills, folk won't usually lose weight cycling. Especially with all the baked goods cyclists are fond of...

Cycling may be four times faster than walking (on average) but it's also four times less effort...

Good on her, at least she is giving it a go.

She must have struggled with Ian 'I cycle to my Minto Street office, honest guvn'r' Murray on the back of that tandem mind.

He is the only person I know who has put weight on since 'starting' cycling.

Or am I being cynical that my constituency MP may have just flung his leg over this tandem-wagon due to the inordinately large number of cyclists in his constituency?

Cynical? Moi

"
A number of constituents have contacted me recently in regards to various issues surrounding cycling and the dangers cyclists currently face on our roads. Last week saw the eleventh cyclist killed on Scotland’s roads this year. This is eleven too many.

...

The Road Traffic Accidents report published in 2010 states that the best way to reduce the number of deaths on our roads each year is by changing the road environment itself and by promoting lower speeds.

I was delighted to join thousands of others earlier this year to take part on Pedal on Parliament and agree with the campaign’s call on the Scottish Government to back up this type of educational campaign with visible enforcement.

"
"
Furthermore, the UK already has ‘strict liability’ for one specific type of crash: two car rear-end shunts, in which the driver of the rear car is presumed liable unless there is clear evidence of fault from the driver of the front car. This law does not mean that rear-end shunts no longer occur or that drivers are more cautious because of it.

...

I own a bike but I only cycle off road mainly because of the safety concerns and a lack of confidence, so I consider myself as one of the people our government needs to convince that cycling on our roads is safe. This is the fundamental issue that need addressed and only when we do this with education and enforcement will we be able to convince more people to live a more active healthier lifestyle and get their bike back on the road.

"

http://www.keziadugdale.com/2013/09/12/safer-cycling-on-our-roads
