Said article has now been covered in the Guardian with a generally much better reception.

Edit: Upon reading the comments further, yes, road tax has made an appearance, along with pavement riding , RLJ etc etc.

@charterhall, the Surrey club cyclist chap quoted a lot of sense. They don't grouting large pelotons etc.

They try to exist in harmony with the locals

The story seems to have drifted from organised sportive e forcing the roads to close to cyclists out for weekend jaunts. The cafe at the top of box hill must make some cash from cyclists.

Oh my, the comments on the torygraph are something else.

They certainly are. I find it quite scary that there are people driving around in cars who are constantly angry towards cyclists and see us as interlopers invading their roads.

And to have a major newspaper brand all cyclists "lycra louts" feeds their anger and, surely, increases the likelihood that one of these nutters is responsible for killing or seriously injuring a cyclist.

Sportive s love going up Box Hill, it is quite easy and close to London. The other hill down that way Ditchling Beacon is it.? Comes at the end of the cycle to Brighton so seems a bit harder. There is also a London Cambridge route, not many hills. I did the London revolution which did not have closed roads, plenty decent cycling in east and north sectors but probably better west and south.

Those selling sportive places will probably tend to focus for the reasons above (box hill icon, slightly nicer roads) on Surrey. Safer to sell where you have sold before, harder to break new ground to the north and east, the revolution not sold out. The glamping at Windsor race track was quiet, despite bands, fireworks etc

The kids were out en masse in balerno last night watching them close the road for the resurfacing. The indignant guy should Learn to love the bomb as it were. (Dr strangelove)

To be fair he does have a point. Since the Olympics there have been numerous sportives in the area, a day long road closure for the London Surrey Classic and this week they are getting another road closure from the ToB. Don't London cyclists and sportive organisers have anywhere else to ride ?

This is the same guy who was complaining about the Surrey Classic, isn't it? I'm glad to see he hasn't expired on account of his raised blood pressure since then.

Honestly, some people. He'd find his life would be much more enjoyable if he treated these sorts of things as a spectacle to enjoy (cf, the French, for whom a passing bike race is an excuse to picnic, drink, have fun by the side of the road) rather than something to take umbrage about.
