Long post - worth reading even though it doesn't mention Edinburgh!

"
KB: .....yes, I think we can reach the target by 2020.

It was later at coffee break, after a few people commenting to me that Keith really reacted in a very 'strange way' to my question, almost as if he was annoyed.....I headed off to the loo. It was on this journey that someone patted me on the back smiling...

Did you hear what he said there?

I hadn't. I hadn't noticed that he had accidental mentioned the word target, instead of vision or ambition. It seems that even Keith is getting confused....

...

Andrew Gilligan gave an excellent talk, but as he pointed out, it was very easy for him to do that, considering he had a budget of nearly £1bn to spend on cycling in London! (That would keep us going for 10 years!) Most importantly though he mentioned people. He mentioned that cycle infrastructure was not for cyclists, it was for everyone.

Absolutely!

London has got it and I can see a bright future for cycling in London. Yes, Andrew did mention that it wouldn't be perfect and that some expectations wouldn't be met....it wouldn't be Amsterdam.... However, they are a million miles and nearly a billion pounds away from the situation in Scotland. I did love this comment he made:

Doing something badly is not an option.

Alison Johnstone then gave a speech which Jon Snow described as 'the most inspiring speech he had heard from a politician....EVER!' It was an excellent speech. There can be no doubt, Alison gets it. Yes, Alison is a green MSP, she is bound to be pro-active travel. However, it goes beyond that. Alison really does gets it. She gets that cycling isn't just an environmental issue, she knows that it answers big issues in health and wealth as well. We need more politicians like Alison in all of the political parties.

...

Cycle infrastructure in Glasgow is already very strong....

...

Overall, I left the day feeling, not dejected, the fact that so many were there was good in itself, but I certainly didn't feel inspired.

The mountain that we have to climb is still there. Someone has built a base camp, which is nice, but otherwise the peak looks as far as always. Rest assure though, this certainly doesn't mean we should pack up and go home. Far from it. In fact we have to shout louder and and we need more people shouting.

Perhaps, I need to annoy Keith Brown just a little bit more....

"

And the rest -

http://www.magnatom.net/2013/11/cycling-scotland-conference-thoughts.html

"And aimed ( at least in part) at sport cyclists"

Some of whom cycle commute too.

Whether PfS is an irrelevance, distraction, good idea or gateway drug can be debated (without much chance of a resolution).

KB cycling more ought to be a good thing.

'We' want more people cycling more - whenever, wherever, whyever - but the Transport Minister should be paying more attention to the cycling as transport bit.

Cycling between two central belt cities once a year doesn't really count (especially if there and back aren't cycled!!)

Andrew Gilligan also noted that big problem in London is growing peak demand for travel and it is faster & cheaper to satisfy that growth with cycling as mode, than build a bigger station/longer train/run more buses, which will only be needed for a very short amount of time on a weekday.

Barclays bikes have 'revenue' consideration from the reduced cost pof having to provide more space on stations and train capacity - basically a cheaper way to remove the straw that breaks the camel's back for the Tube & Bus networks at peak times.

KB and pretty much most of the establishment don't seem to have made that connection. There are many in their 20's & 30's who have made a clear decision not to bother with learning to drive, let alone aspire to owning a car, they are slowly being joined by institutions where the actual cost savings from not providing for the car are so massive that it becomes a no-brainer to give discounted or free use of buses, bikes and other modes of transport.

Keith Brown MSP, Minister for Transport and Veterans, The Scottish Government talked much about partnership working and progress across Scotland. He promised that in 2014 he will attempt to cycle the whole 50 miles of Pedal for Scotland from Edinburgh to Glasgow. He told us that investment in cycling is at a Scottish high. He outlined the updates in the Cycle Action Plan for Scotland (2013), commended the Annual Cycling Summit. He explained that transport infrastructure in Scotland lags behind for road transport and cars. He outlined the necessity for the continual big projects such as the New Forth Crossing, and A9 dualling to maintain and upkeep transport infrastructure. He was planning a vision for active travel.

For some people having a car/driving is part of their quality of life - esp when comparing the alternative (no transport/mobility).

Even for people wanting to cycle improved 'quality of life' isn't really on the horizon under present (and apparent future) circumstances.

I wasn't at yesterday's conference, so I only have media (Twitter, Scotsman, GH) versions so far.

On the face of it KB said a lot of 'the right things' but is deluded (or just devious) if he thinks LAs will do what's necessary - even the ones (inc CEC) that are doing some good stuff.

More money and a counter to the car culture are what is required. BUT.

Also in attendance was Transport Minister Keith Brown, who said: "Cycling is firmly on this Scottish Government's agenda and investment is at a record high.

"However, I believe we can and must all do more. Over the past year I have had numerous meetings with key stakeholders to discuss what interventions will move us forward on cycling.

"Community links and safe routes to school, as well as education and training, are vital if we are to realise our shared 10% vision for cycling and for a healthier nation."

Mr Brown said he wanted local authorities to be ambitious, bold and innovative in their approaches to cycling, "to come up with exemplar projects which can really make a difference".
