The polis seem to be a wee bit selective about applying the drinking ban. If you're sitting in the botanics on a spring evening with a cheeky wee bottle and not bothering anyone then they don't seem to mind. If you're a teenager on a street with some Bucky then it might be different.

I drink coffee or water.

It's not the drinking in "the streets" that's the issue, it's the disorder associated with it. Surely the police have the powers to deal with that already?

Wow, this Single Police Force is bringing all sorts of benefits. I have to say, I always thought the ability to have a beer or two in a public park showed we were a bit grown up - the prospect of pc plod handing out fixed pens to meadows bbq attendees nakes me slightly sad.

Not as sad as losing 12 officers from front line policing though - dearie me.

"
Councillors have moved to cut the £2.7 million local authority budget for community policing by £500,000, saying they no longer feel they have any influence over where the officers they fund work since the introduction of the national police force.

"Oh hang on, I pay the money, I'm just not seeing it."

Worse than that according to first article -

"
CITY leaders are set to cut the cash they put into community policing because they claim officers are being deployed elsewhere.

Not exactly about cycling but there's that “Following engagement with the public across Edinburgh" justification -

"

Police Scotland, however, spelled out its determination to step up action against drinking in the streets and a force spokesman said they “will use all legislation at [their] disposal to tackle offences that frequently impact upon communities”.

He said: “Following engagement with the public across Edinburgh, antisocial drinking and associated disorder was identified as a concern for many residents and businesses and, in response, officers have invoked an existing city by-law as one of a number of tactics to address this matter.

"

http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/edinburgh-to-fight-glasgow-style-drinking-ban-1-3103662

- the one that accounts for the police interest in cycling on pavements. They consult things like Community Councils.

I think 'we' probably think that general road behaviour is more of any issue than pavement cycling or street drinking.

On the face of it the headline/story is a non-event/kiteflying however there has been a rapid development -

"

Council chiefs and police top brass are to hold crunch talks over a perceived “Glasgow-style” policing strategy in the Capital.

"

http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/city-leaders-to-discuss-glagsow-style-policing-1-3105314#PhotoSwipe1379762111167

Perhaps people will write to Cllrs. Burns and Cardownie and suggest they mention 'road safety' - things like enforcement of ASLs and 20mph zones.
