I think, though not completely certain, that 002 only has changes to the Elm Row space even though it extends further - all of the London Rd / southern bi-directional / Gayfield Sq treatments look the same to me, but there's also a bit of a dearth of up to date satellite imagery on map platforms at the moment so hard to cross-reference.

Received 'final' plans - notably these omit dropped kerb at Montgomery Street requested by Spokes, but that is coming also.

https://edi.bike/files/2025/06-Elm-Row-Changes/Elm-Row-Final-Plan-001.pdf

https://edi.bike/files/2025/06-Elm-Row-Changes/Elm-Row-Final-Plan-002.pdf

Plan 1 shows a northern bank of one loading bay and five parking spaces, and a southern bank of three spaces and one loading bay. The total, 8 spaces, matches the 'after' plan above and will likely be configured 6 parking bays and 2 blue badge bays - I can't imagine a reduction in parking reducing blue badge spaces and getting away with it (nor would I agree with it, personally).

@cb parking spaces will be side-on when finished, meaning less spaces.

From the pile of documents I don't think I'm supposed to have:

Before

After

'Loss of disabled parking bays' in 'after' image is incorrect, 2 bays either way. Not sure how that was left in. These are from a while ago and may not reflect final plans - Councillors were asked about seeing full plans in May and while positive noises were forthcoming, technical output was not.

Work underway at Elm Row to put both directions of cycle lane on the Elm Row side of the trees.

They appear to have (gasp) eaten into the road to make space for this. Cars still being parked diagonally to the kerb, not sure if this is the intention when work is complete?

Presumably the plan would then be to remove the cycle lane on the Leith Walk side of the trees, thereby making the bus stops non-floating.

I think the only talk of "fixing" anything, was the bike lane around the Elm Row area. Where controversy has been (manufactured) over how close the two lanes are to parked cars* and/or a floating bus stop.

Not sure about them going back and fixing the Leith Walk bike lane if I'm honest. It's so bad (having been voted worst in the world twice) it's becoming a tourist attraction in it's own right. I'm surprised no-one's selling t-shirts with 'I survived the Leith Walk bike lane'.

An ostensible lack of flexibility doesn't seem to stop workies doing whatever the heck they like most of the time, especially when it comes to obeying regs on temp signage or the quality of their "making good". And surely there would be some kind of process by which whoever's running things on the ground on a given day can run stuff up the flagpole to someone with the authority to say "ehhh, <rule2>, let's hold off on that bit for today until we figure where the issue is".

But that's contract management in a nutshell. It may be nonsensical in bricks and mortar terms but the contract clauses don't allow that convenient common sense variation, otherwise everyone and their dog would tinker with - or not do - things because stuff didn't make sense. The question is, who is writing those parts of the contracts, and who is project managing the works on the ground?

It's why a pothole repair that includes a 'make good' clause that requires the repainting of a DYL affects only that portion bounded by the reinstatement, rather than the far more sensible approach of addressing a 100m long stretch of road where it's also worn out, so you get three feet of new paint marooned in a sea of ghost lines.

It may actually make sense in the grand scheme, in terms of making good progress with the Picardy Place project as a whole, even notwithstanding the necessary subsequent repairs, but it's incredibly poor PR management to have such a bizarre critical path in a project and to leave it to the chipwrappers to expose the unexplained.

I'm sure the active travel fund is awash with cash that can be used to soak up these minor anomalies...

There's also the small matter of what appears to be a public water fountain also installed in the middle of the cycle lane. I suppose it will need moved as well - all at the taxpayer's expense.

I appreciate some might argue that the workies only installed the facilities as per the plans - but someone had to sign those plans off. Possibly several people - what were they thinking. Also, I would hope never to employ someone who saw something that was clearly stupid and just went ahead and did it anyway.

"Edinburgh residents have been left baffled after a lamppost appeared in the middle of a cycle path as part of a new development on a busy road.

Locals wandering around the Picardy Place directly opposite the Omni Centre noticed the street light which appeared to be erected in the centre of a three-way bike lane."

It is not immediately clear to the bus user whether to use the bus stop at the temporary sign or the flag on the shelter. (Previously there were two stops here, reflecting the high demand).

There is a cycle lane immediately in front of the shelter. We observed passenger/cyclist conflicting moves in the short time we were there.

The shelter is 7m from the kerb. It takes 7 seconds to cross the gap. See above regarding this (Shrubhill).

The is no clear line of sight from the shelter to approaching buses.

He admitted that he "doesn't really know anybody in Edinburgh who's happy with the design that we see unfolding just now", adding that the work on Leith Walk was still "incomplete".

Mr Scott added: "Going forward, we will make good these defects and there will be a demarcation between the footpath and the cycle way. But if there's issues, once the project is completed, we will absolutely address them."

The busy road has undergone a major transformation in recent months, in part to allow the construction of tram lines to Newhaven.

However this has not come without controversy from locals. One woman spotted a huge crowd of people waiting for a bus in the middle of a cycle route.
