What's the valid counter argument to why this is a bad thing™?

It's a cash cow™.

Oh sorry, you said valid argument ;-)

Not directly related to parking but perhaps this?

http://www.dft.gov.uk/vca/fcb/cars-and-carbon-dioxide.asp

In the light of the latest IPCC report

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/pdfs/27_09_13_ipccsummary.pdf

(warning Adobe PDF)

The climate change secretary:

Ed Davey, climate change secretary:

"

The gases emitted now are accumulating in the atmosphere and so the solutions must be set in motion today. The risks and costs of doing nothing today are so great, only a deeply irresponsible government would be so negligent.

Without urgent action to cut greenhouse gas emissions, this warming will continue, with potentially dangerous impacts upon our societies and economy.

This strengthens the case for international leaders to work for an ambitious, legally binding global agreement in 2015 to cut carbon emissions.

"

Whereas Eric Pickles et al want to see loosening of rules discouraging use of cars? Disconnected.

I read that article this morning. I don't understand what the problem is with cameras that catch people parking illegally. I'm perfectly happy for councils to rake in vast sums of money if people illegally park, as that should mean less council tax for me, who doesn't park illegally. Personally, I'd have cameras everywhere, fining everyone who parked or drove illegally in any way. As it is, about 99.999%* of illegal activity on the roads goes unpunished.

What's the valid counter argument to why this is a bad thing™?

* Clearly that's a guess, but that's what it feels like.

"
Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said he wanted to "rein in over-zealous and unfair rules".

Static and spy-car cameras have been used to issue more than 10 million fines, totalling £301m, in the past five years, the Conservatives say.

Councils said CCTV and camera cars played a road safety role.
