Events like Pedal for Scotland are a great way to get people onto their bikes to benefit their own health as well as the wider benefits for society that cycling brings

Or they reinforce a quasi-official message amongst the populace that the only safe and enjoyable way for mass cycling, particularly involving youngsters, are organised Sunday-run events where you are corralled away from motor vehicles and encouraged to wear a fluorescent vest.

The SNP frequently talks about Scotland become another Nordic nation and about learning from other small, successful countries in Europe. Well talk is cheap, we should judge them by their actions and show that they are learning the lesson on transport policy and local democracy from the mainland of Europe.

My recent experience of travelling on the mainland has shown just how far behind we are.

He 'said' this (probably didn't write it, but must have signed-off??)

"

"Learning lessons from a major cycling nation, in a recent visit to the Netherlands I saw first-hand the impact that developing the right infrastructure, education and attitudes on cycling can have. By walking or cycling rather than using the car for short journeys, it is easy for everyone to reduce carbon emissions, improve our health and wellbeing, play our part in making Scotland cleaner and greener and it’s free.

"Given one in three car journeys in Scotland are under two miles and nearly a quarter of all our trips are one mile or less, we have a lot to gain from leaving the car at home.

"

Does he understand it?

Does he believe it??

Will he put the money up and not hide behind 'it's up to local authorities'???

"
The Scottish Government has the power to transform the way we move around, but at the moment only a tiny fraction (just over 1%) of the total transport budget in Scotland is allocated to cycling and walking.

"

I can think of a few even better ways. But they involve spending money and annoying motorists don't they Keith.

Seriously, people take part in things like PfS because they're in a big group, and marshalled, and it makes people feel 'safe'. If I could commute every day with marshals holding up traffic, and a feed station and stalls giving away goodies at the end it would be superb!
