The MetaBike will be in commuting use throughout, with the soon-to-be-spiked tourer carrying on as the city runabout and on any snow days.

Need to fit the rear magicshine foglight, but apart from that I'm grand.

Maybe I've got a wrong sense of priorities, but my lovely new recumbent bike is staying in on anything other than bright sunny days. I'll be taking my old standard MTB through whatever the winter offers, especially rain. With MTB tyres, it's not too bad in low-grip conditions. The only problem is the visibility; I wear black, the bike is black and I need a strobe light at the back to be visible. I've got a waterproof hi-viz jacket but it makes me too hot - perhaps I ought to invest in some hi-viz non-jacket stuff ..

I had the same experience a couple of years ago on Cleish! Rode up from the south with a few slips and spins, but on the way down north we had to walk down the verge as it was icy as flip!!

I like to ride my Dawes in summer and cyclocross Cotic in winter, as it has better clearance for spikes. I liked the Cotic last winter so much it was June before I convinced myself that my disk brakes were rubbish and needed renewing. I've just had the Cotic serviced and it rides lovely, which is probably why I stayed on it until the chain and cassette wore out way past their use by date!

I use all of my bikes all year round.

The 'bent is best in winter - less distance to fall, nice big tyres - but I got the chameleon to the top of Cleish hill with 23mm tyres on ice a few years back. Then I had to walk down...

I must get round to fitting guards on the Croix.

Maintenance is performed as and when it's required, or a few days later if I don't get round to it immediately. The front shifter cable has needed to be replaced for about two years so I might do that sometime this week, to go with the new rear one fitted yesterday. I already topped-up my supply of lights to have at least one spare for each end earlier in the year. My only winter-based decision will be whether to install one of the spiky tyres in Uberuce's group order on the sparebike's dynohub front wheel or on a spare non-dynohubbed front wheel. There's already a spare freewheeled rear wheel for the spiker to go on, unless I decide the rim would look better rebuilt onto a freehub for use as a rear wheel on properbike.

When I took my cotic in for its service, the mech put his chain wear gauge on, and it fell off it was that loose/worn!! He was reported asking my mate (in, a few days later), what I did on it, oh he commutes 5 days a week to Edinburgh.. ;o)
I now have a chain guage and must start using it, either that or just replace the chain every 3 months regardless.

Seeing as it's the same as the summer bike, my winter bike is always out.

Preparation for winter will involve finding where I put the lights in March and a vague intention to do some 'maintenance' that never quite happens.

Two days last year where the ice was such that the spikes were helpful. The specific two days were several weeks apart. I ran with spikes for about a week on both occasions. Definite craze. I do need a new front wheel on my commuter (winter and summer). I did have my last spin on non mudguarded bike a week last Thursday. Temperature set to plummet. Forecasts have been accurate this year IMO.

Finally got round to putting full mudguards onto wee blue floofy while I was replacing BB and crankset; dynodrum hub is still on the cards; spiked tyres waiting for stock alert; gearing lowered to be spike friendly.

"My winter bike will be the same as my summer bike. I might make a set of spiky wheels for the possibility of snow."

+1

Definitely waiting for "real" winter before the spikes go on.

We didn't get that much snow last year......did we?

I did the reverse, as my <strike>Maintenance Free Bike</strike> Eternally Broken Hub Gear Bike was up on bricks I spent the summer on my not-to-be-commuted-on road bike, recumbent, and folding terror.

So now it actually is getting towards winter, I'm on my summer commuter again, which now feels like a winter bike!

The huge marathon tyres are really chewing through WoL, Donkey Lane and related rough spots however. Great!

I am "winterising" my bike by adding an extra rear light and hoping that all moving components will last the winter with just some extra oil/grease. Lack of light and surplus of saline are the main enemies.

When the real winter comes (the week or two of snow, slush and ice) I will put the snow tyres on the tourer.
