I'll be taking my old standard MTB through whatever the winter offers, especially rain. With MTB tyres, it's not too bad in low-grip conditions. The only problem is the visibility; I wear black, the bike is black and I need a strobe light at the back to be visible. Rode up from the south with a few slips and spins, but on the way down north we had to walk down the verge as it was icy as flip!!</p> <p>I like to ride my Dawes in summer and cyclocross Cotic in winter, as it has better clearance for spikes. I liked the Cotic last winter so much it was June before I convinced myself that my disk brakes were rubbish and needed renewing. The front shifter cable has needed to be replaced for about two years so I might do that sometime this week, to go with the new rear one fitted yesterday. I already topped-up my supply of lights to have at least one spare for each end earlier in the year. My only winter-based decision will be whether to install one of the spiky tyres in Uberuce's group order on the sparebike's dynohub front wheel or on a spare non-dynohubbed front wheel. The specific two days were several weeks apart. I ran with spikes for about a week on both occasions. Definite craze. I do need a new front wheel on my commuter (winter and summer). I did have my last spin on non mudguarded bike a week last Thursday. Temperature set to plummet.
