Too warm yesterday with the long sleeve lycra thing, the wooly lidl jumper and decathlon waterproof (new) ditched the jumper today and much better. nicee new dayglo yellow gloves too I was blinding myself as I started my ride, reminds me, need new night glasses as the previous lidl ones proved the only bad buy from there so far being as they are foam padded around the entire eye socket and steamed up, also the option for elastic strap to keep them on your bonce means they're hard to get off and out of the way - cue glasses over mouth and mild discomfort around the ears with helmet straps getting in the way
That said the winter of 2010 was a good one, nearly what a foot of snow in town? Never seen that before, all hinges on the jet stream which does look like it could be cold at weekend and Mon/Tue

I find over-shoes more effective than thick woollen sock. This is because they cut out the wind (from cycling). Thick socks might mean that your shoes fit too tightly causing circulation problems and thus not helping. I wear woolly boolies - warm but not too thick.

For socks, I use old woolen hillwalking socks, which are perfect. Good socks for walking are quite expensive if you just want to wear them for cycling, but I expect that cheaper woolen socks would be just as warm.

Chilly start this morning so, for me, it was L/S merino base layer and soft-shell jacket (for windproofing). Three-quarter length leggings and full finger gloves (for the first time since last winter). Felt fine with that, apart from a slight chilling of the feet.

Anyone got any good winter sock recommendations?

I think the full finger gloves will make an earlier appearance than last year due to changing handlebars.

"Didn't they bust the weather forecasting service making the annual Siberian predictions as being one bloke and a laptop? "

The Evening News forecast is sponsored by the wool undies industry. Unlike the Met Office, whose forecast doesn't really support the EEN story.

Was sunny when I left the house but it had just rained so I was fully togged up.
Which was just as well by the time I got to the NEPN - absolutely chucked it down all the way into the west end.

Was wearing my gillet so my torso was nice and dry. Unfortunately, I had to get straight onto a customer phone call when I got in with absolutely soaked shoulders. Still not been for a shower...

I think I just about got it right, short sleeved Helly Hanson and SS Jersey, shorts and arm warmers, with fingerless gloves. Cool until Dalmeny then ok to work. Usually come winter I'm either too warm or don't warm up before work.

Yes, back to average for October, if you'd taken the BBC forecast last night at face value, we'd had 60mph winds from the NW, blowing us into town this morning. The reality was the usual blustery SW wind, particularly on the Bridge. Funny time of year for trying to get the right layers, first day without shorts and felt too hot but hands were cold (?). A steady stream of high vis waterproofs in from the Bridge is the sign its autumn. Watch out for those leaves covering track edges and verges, had a bad wipe out this time last year on the narrow strech above Cramond Brig.

""Cold snap coming"

Yes. It's called "winter""

Get with the program kappers. Temperatures will plummet as we face a Siberian freeze with arctic conditions bringing chaos and misery. Just like last year. And the year before. And the year before...

I just wish this winter thing was predictable so we could all plan for it. Y'know, if it happened on, I don't know, an annual basis?
