If you continue to Balerno the hill is much less steep than kirk brae in currie

The cafe Woods Deli is open thurs, fri and sat nights. Nice. It is in juniper green

Also be aware that when EddieD casually says 'up the hill to the top', it's actually a very long and steep climb!

Cheers for the advice - I'm pretty impressed with the saferide - it's really antisocially bright if you're below handlebar level, but manages not to glare above that. I suppose it won't be much good for low hanging branches - I'll maybe put a light on my head too....

For EddieD's route you'll need a seriously antisocial light for sections - some of that will be properly dark....

Thanks a lot! I will have to go exploring round there. I have a phillips saferide now which makes the unlit parts much better and isn't too antisocial to everyone else.

Take the canal to Slatford, the WOL path to Currie, up the hill to the top, turn left, head through the farms and along the path past Clubbiedean and Torphin reservoirs, down through Colinton, back onto the WOL path...

(Alternatively head all the way to Balerno on WOL, then take Harlaw road and continue as above)

One of my favourite late night routes

Thanks - I thought it was supposed to be closed too - HS on their website say:

"From October until late March/early April the High Road will be closed overnight from 15.30 and it will re-open each morning, if it is safe to do so, by 08.30."

I will contact them and ask and report back

Thanks all - in the end the little one's not well so we stayed closer to home and went round the seat a couple of times and then I went over to Musselburgh and back quickly. Why the seat isn't closed to neddy revving fiestas at night I don't know but the view's always worth it at the top - the way the castle is framed by the rock as you come round to the downhill is pretty special....

Was quite easy getting out to Balerno tonight. Wind from NE it would seem thus behind on way up hill and into you on the way down the hill. Makes sense to me.

Congrats on your new freedom algo, Granton to Cramond is gonna be mega windy tonight, maybe try a more sheltered route? I've no idea where, depends where you're coming from I guess. I always go along the canal when I fancy a wee jaunt at night, mostly because I live next to it. I'll usually get to Broxburn and back in a couple of hours or so. Enjoy wherever you end up!

Hello,

for the first time in nearly 12 months, my partner and I have the opportunity to go out this evening on our bikes together - our daughter's Granny having made the journey up from far off London for the first time in ages. We'd be cycling between 8 and 10 so I reckon 25 miles is probably our limit. I'm not 100% sold on the Granton route to Cramond at night, although I'd quite like to do that and come back via Leith/Portobello - what do people think? I'd be very grateful for any advice or suggestions of possible routes.

Thanks a lot as always.
