I was the coo's tail at the start as we got stopped by every traffic light between Linlithgow and the Forth Road Bridge. So it wasn't until I got to Auchterarder that I saw anyone I knew. But by that time I was in a group including Darkerside which stayed together in part until the end. We wanted to try the famous cafe in Stirling but it was full (DaveC and Panyagua among those who beat us to it). Longer than my previous longest by about 70km. I managed to get round in 10 hrs, but was absolutely broken by the end. The climb out of Duns was merciless, and I was cursing my lack of gears. I usually manage hills fine, but when I was tired I would have done anything for an extra gear on the climbs.<br /> I thought we'd be taking the road past the Whiteadder Reservoir, and was keeping an eye out for it, knowing the long climb would follow. Huge relief when I realised we were going the other way, and were already at the top of Redstone Rigg. That spurred me on to get the final 40km done quickly.<br /> I should have got a lot more hours in the saddle, and had more water on the way round. Other than that, a success. Looks as though it will be a fine day, not too hot, but just right.</p> <p>On reflection though, I just don't feel fit enough to take on even a 200k. I've not ridden any decent distance since May, I've put weight on, and haven't done any training rides. This wouldn't have bothered me two years ago, but now it does: after two rides in the spring where I struggled and DNF'd, I know better than to set off on an addax feeling insufficiently prepared.</p> <p>So, I'm a DNS with some regret, but I think it's the right decision for me at this point. To all riding the Erit Lass today, enjoy the ride. If it's still running in 2015 I hope to be in better condition to take it on. In the meantime I'll look to improving fitness and shedding a few kilos, do some longer rides without time pressures, and will hopefully be back on the addax scene in the spring. </p>
