Well, except for some of those with a couple of very clean mountain bikes on their roof, going to or from a 1 mile ride on some country lane!

Nice touch, the driver is probably a cyclist too. Good cyclists make better and considereate drivers. I hope the driver doesn't get a ticking off by his bosses for going too slow!

I think that's it - of course I'm cycling, because I always cycle and why wouldn't anyone know that... :D

Good email, good behaviour, and worthy of praise to show that considerate driving is appreciated by cyclists. Might be worth a follow-up just to emphasise you were cycling, for that very reason.

When you're a dedicated rider, it' can be easy to forget to tell others that's what you were doing (i.e. cycling), simply because it's what you always do - nothing unusual to you :-)

Hmmmm, this is a good point. Have re-read and there's one 'rode' in there, but kinda buried... Just funny how a good or abad incident can make you feel differently about a company whose livery is on the side.

Well done to both parties.
@WC it might be obvious to us that you were on a cycle during this incident but I have images of them thinking they'd been emailed by a slow driver, or perhaps a fast runner...

I gave him a thumbs up first when leaving the industrial estate (in case he was turning the opposite way) so that might also have helped humanise things, but in fairness he'd already showed more patience than I expected. Certainly in dealing with other companies' removal vans they're not usually the most patient, and I think is definitely worth the positive reinforcement. A huge number of companies have little reward systems in place, so it can all play into that.

Can't find an email address for the Edinburgh branch, but the overall group has a twitter address that I'll tweet with a link to this at lunchtime.

There is also that well-known (to some of us) local removals firm with a cyclist behind the wheel...

Rare!

And well worth that email.

Wonder to what extent it's 'company policy' and how much the 'right sort' of "I'm a cyclist too"??

Dear Sirs

I would be grateful if you could pass on my thanks to one of your (John Duncan Removals) drivers for an excellent display of patience and observation this morning. I think the registration began EK53, and I first came across the van/lorry at King's Haugh, as I passed through the industrial estate there, and the van was leaving at the same time.

Your driver waited behind as I passed a burger van and lorry parked on the road, and was obviously paying attention as there was no attempt to overtake before we reached Peffermill Road, with a couple of vehicles turning into the industrial estate. He was held up slightly at the junction, but had caught me again by the biscuit factory on Peffermill Road; however he remained behind as first I came round the bend to the left without any attempt to pass, then rode through a couple of pinch points, again without any attempt to pass. All this time the driver kept a good distance back, so I never felt harried (though I did attempt to maintain at least 20mph to repay his consideration).

We were clearly going in the same direction, as I rounded Cameron Toll still in front, and even though I moved left on Lady Road, confident in your driver's ability to pass me safely, he waited until it was clear that I was going straight on to Esslemont Road and he was turning up Craigmillar Park.

The whole time your driver inspired absolute confidence in what he was doing, and hopefully he saw the couple of times I gave him a thumbs up.

Many thanks
Anth
