Are spokes or anyone campaigning for a "dead slow" speed limit for motor vehicles around the tracks ? 15 mph ?

The tracks will stay as they are. Options to improve our lot are limited and include banning cyclists from the vicinity. I'd rather they got in quick with some postive options before some bright spark comes up with the solution

Just puhlease, for the sake of our colelctive sanity, don't copy/paste them in here!

"what is needed is for the cyclists to pay attention to the road ahead, taking account of the tram lines, and cycle at an appropriate speed and in the correct position on the carriageway so as not to put themselves at risk."

Absolutely, good advice which I can't disagree with.

Unfortunately there is *no* safe position on the carriageway to avoid the tramlines, no matter the speed.

(And also, change the reference from cyclist to drivers and it's still good advice)

"This is stupid. Cyclists are not being "forced" to do anything. As long as there are no parked vehicles at the stretch of road concerned, there is no need for cylclists to take on the rails at a dangerous angle at any point. If there are parked taxis, why not just dismount and walk along the pavement for a few yards? How hard can it be?!!"

Argh, more comments from people who haven't actually seen the bit of road!!!

"All about angles of attack, this muppet gives it about 5%. You need to hit it at almost a 90% angle!

Just sliding into the groove will obviously result in a crash. I navigate the tracks daily and have only crashed once. Which was entirely my fault."

Riiiiiiight. I'd like to see this cyclist try to get through these tracks at a 90% (?) angle.....

we’d encourage cyclists to use the cycle lane

People are falling BEFORE they get anywhere near the jughandle. How is this going to help? There is no cycle lane into the jughandle. Between the ASL at bottom of Morrison Street and the Jughandle you are on your own to try and pick a safe line. Clearly she hasn't even bothered to look at Chdots videos or the layout here..

Good to see Cllr Hinds has this sorted:

“We’re looking at ways to improve the situation as it’s important that cyclists have access to a safe line through the area. In the meantime, we’d encourage cyclists to use the cycle lane if possible and, if it’s blocked, proceed at a slower pace.”

See - if those cyclists had just slowed down a bit, none of this would have happened. If cars were skidding off the road at Haymarket it would be closed until a safe solution to the problem had been found. Drivers would not be encouraged to slow down (or bunnyhop thier cars over the tram lines).

Don't forget that Road.cc is well populated by types whose main experience of cycling is in clubland and raceland and therefore assume everyone cycling to work/shops/school/swimmingpool/fullyloaded should be able to do emergency bunny hops to negotiate any obstructions. Their point of view on this might not be entirely objective.

In fact until anyone has tried to ride that route in traffic, the dark, and the wet, their tuppence is worth more like a thruppeny.

I think we need a video of Danny MacAskill doing this section and put that on the EEN as an instructional video for the recommended way for everyday cyclists to get around this section of road.

Hoiking the front wheel up is not a bunny-hop. That's when you get both wheels off the ground and that's what would be needed to avoid slipping on these tracks as the video shows. It's a mountain biking skill.

(yes, I know someone linked to an upgrade kit on here the other day. Currently my bike cannot be hopped. And to be quite honest, why should I have to learn to hop my bike? And it is one thing for a man to hop a lightweight road bike to which his feet are attached, and another for a woman on a heavy-laden town bike. Are they suggesting that SRD hops her tandem?)

'hop'? really? not something i can do, nor s'thing i want to try on a busy road with uneven surface.

just makes me think they're all bullies. or idiots. or both.

Plenty commenters though (on Roaad.cc) saying that hopping your front wheel, or crossing at a less acute angle, is basic bike handling that everyone should know.

These type of comments annoy me for a couple of reasons. Firstly, everyone has to start somewhere, you cannot assume that everyone who jumps on a bike is immediately aware of exactly how they should ride around every hazard. Some are hazards that we can do nothing about, but this leads onto the second point...

The road design here basically forces a shallow angle on riders crossing the tram lines. They creep across and across and acroos, and at some point you have to make a decision to cross. Sometimes in the dark adn the wet with traffic around you. Personally I'd never comment on what someone should or shouldn't do on a particular bit of road unless I knew it - commenting from the comfort of the south of England having never set foot north of the border, let alone ridden this piece of nonsense, is just someone with a superiority complex feeding their own ego.

And the people on there commenting that he wasn't ewaring hi-viz or a helmet... How would either have stopped him falling on tramlines?
