thanks - that probably explains it then; in particular why most of vehicles seemed surprised and felt the need to weave around to see what was happening....

I think the A6124 is shut for 3 or 4 weeks forcing all the traffic along the High Street

It's not normally that bad. Lothian buses were Tweeting about delays to their services.

I get to Carberry Road by the Inveresk Road cut-through. From Joppa you could reach it from Market Street/Campie Road and across the pavement onto Olive Bank Road then past Tesco.

The A6124 was closed for some reason yesterday (in the morning certainly) so that would push a lot more traffic onto the High St than normal.

Ah, yeah - the Fisherrow High St (North High St) is tight; it's only at Bridge St that things widen out.

Yep, I bypass the High St if going out east or coming back west. Only time I venture in is to turn off just over the bridge onto the A6124 to head out to Carberry Rd. That turn can be a bit awkward if there are also queueing cars, mind...

cheers for that - I'll be sure to do that next time I go that way. I'm not sure why it was so bad last night - perhaps I just found it tough where others wouldn't. There certainly didn't seem like a great deal of space to me - certainly not up the left anyway.

Like you say, many cycle New St and Millhill as a good bypass around the busier centre (N High St, Bridge St, High St)... But saying that I've never found it too bad, most parts have reasonable width at least.

Helo,

yesterday my partner broke down somewhere on the A199 near Tranent - I had to go out and fix stuff and drive home, and it meant I cycled through the centre of Musselburgh at around 6. I know now that cycling on the High Street at the time was daft as there are good route options, but I wasn't sure exactly where the van was and so I stuck to the A199...

Well that was daft - clearly there's a better way round, but that was the most dangerous 10 minutes I've had in a long time. The traffic jam was causing drivers to meander around to try and work out why there was a blockage. I tried to filter up the right (as good practice suggests), but then it can be tough to find a way back in once the traffic moves without angering people and the visibility was awful- also for me as a glasses wearer.

I imagine this was inexperience showing - I reckon I'd try and turn off left at the petrol station next time - which is almost certainly what most folk do.

I had some problems keeping my tools from hitting my heel in the pannier, and someone on the entrance to the innocent cycleway stopped to ask if I was ok, which I greatly appreciated, but they were too fast for me (not difficult) and I never got the chance to say hello and thanks.
