A bike with worn cotter pins - the very definition of a clunker - awful to ride until you found someone grown up who could fix it.

The 1972 Victor Book for Boys had a comic strip called "The Gorgonzola Special".

All about a cross country bike race, where the hero of the story manages to win by doing extensive recce-ing of the course before hand.

He can't afford a good bike so he makes his heavy bike lighter by drilling it full of holes - hence the name (but should really be The Edam Special).

Ok, sounds a bit rubbish, and it probably was, but it would be interesting to see it again.

EDIT: Found it!

"If in doubt, get a bigger hammer :)"

Nope.

Usually that just bends the threaded bit quicker.

Important thing is to support crank before hitting with hammer - bit of conduit usually works.

Cotter pins fine.

Getting them out (often) less so!

Topsy and Tim inevitably go cycling. Emphasis on road safety.

Good to see that list.

When I was younger - okay, it's quite a while ago now - just about all the books I read showed cycling as aspirational, getting one was a rite of passage - nowadays normally bikes don't get a mention. Plus ça change and all that.
