The grey 'unrated' roads now include those which "carry small (below 2,000 vehicles per day) traffic volumes", so the highest risk roads from last year are excluded from rating on this map as they had low flows.

Interesting that all three of the highest risk roads in the 2006-2010 map are "unrated" in the 2007-2011 map.

I'd be cautious about using this to determine which are safe roads for cycling.

The simplest example I can give is that on the map, all the motorways are green (safest possible roads) as is half of the A68, while the A701 is two risk levels higher.

I've been on some audaxes where I rode the whole length of the A701 and was only passed by half a dozen cars. On the A68 traffic is going 15-25mph faster and you'll be passed by dozens of cars and trucks every minute...

That's fair, just thought it was worth a disclaimer. A bit like when cycle routes started on Google maps, tried to send me down the A90 from Aberdeen!

I suppose it really does depend on where you want to go when you head out on a cycle, and what your personal perception or threshold of what is a dangerous road is.
I for one would rather plan a route knowing where was the highest potential of danger and where the lowest is, and yes although its a map about motoring stats, by proxy it usefully serves to inform other groups, such as cyclists etc: (in my humble opinion.)
And its of interest to me in particular to see the demographics in a simple format if i am heading out on a route that necessitates using some of these roads, in particular the A702. Regards, RJ

It's handy for driving, but not so useful for cycling. Apart from the obvious (i.e. motorways) I'd never call the A702 low to medium risk for cycling.

Dear All, stumbled across this wee gem, tells you a bit about how dangerous some of the rural roads are, and which ones are not as dangerous.
Quite handy really.
Hope you find this of use.
