Make the most of it - the weather is changing back to our usual 11deg C at the weekend. Need to wear tights with your skirt! 8)

And on Utility kilts kaputnik - here is a selection from E-bay shops. I don't think they are too expensive compared to a full 8-yard. tartan one.

As you say SH, very few ladies skirts do have pockets and a small proportion of them have good deep ones. As women carry their "stuff" in handbags, men are destined to carry their "junk" in pockets. Suits were good for this but they are very limited in scope compared to the variety of clothing available to women.

I do have a few cargo skirts (khaki and beige) and some denim ones with pockets front and back which just about carries all I need. (phone, wellet, loose chang, keys etc). I also have 3 kilts - one tartan (no pockets and needs the sporran) and two Utilitikilts (one black and the other beige) both of which have good deep side pockets.

This particular one being marketed, seems to be targeted to men but is being sold for both sexes. Logical really, as women wear trousers a lot of the time nowadays (either with or without pockets)

Probably the pockets ... it seems we females are deemed to carry everything we need in our handbags so we almost never get decent pockets

This may sound silly as I'm non skirt wearing, but what makes a skirt unisex?

Is there not enough shapes / colours / patterns out there already which fit the bill?

Well as an update, the Unisex skirt company now has enough orders to stsrt production - and mine has been confirmed should arrive November sometime. It ia initially available in black and khaki - mine is black.

I could give it a bike test when Iit arrives and report again. And as you say Min, it does have deep quite pockets! :-)

I've been absent from this site for a while - as I have been working in Glasgow full time but more recently part time (3 daye there) and the other two days in Edinburgh office. My previous employment folded necessitating a change of employment.

Since the last time, I am still wearing skirts :-) but have not had much opportunity for cycling :-(

It seems that there are (gradually) getting a few more skirted men out there - and I have met a number of them too. One meeting in Edinburgh had 4 skirted men (and the wife of one of them) and we had a great time just chetting.

There is also a new company in America who are striving to get a new "Unisex" skirt on the market - see link below. I have already ordered one for whan it does take off:-

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/skirtcraft/unisex-skirts

Fingers crossed that it does take-off

Hello AMIAS!

A kindred spirit! I work near Haymarket as well and get the bike or bus in (also occasionally the car if I need it during the day), so our paths might cross sometime! How will we recognize each other? - Oh yes, of course - silly me!

Cycling from Stirling is a bit of a hike unless you are in training for Le Tour. For me it is around 9 miles from Balerno (SW edge of Edinburgh) Ok on the way in but mainly uphill on the way back.

maninaskirt,

Fear not your not alone! I quite often wear one myself. I commute Stirling-->Haymarket daily followed by a trot into work. Like you I have found that no one gives a monkeys, its just clothes after all. Particularly comfortable in the summer months!

I cycle at the other end of my commute, about 4 miles from home to Stirling station. Currently trying to get my workplace to support the Bike To Work scheme, but having no joy! I'm afraid the commute by bike from Stirling each day would be too far!

Yes - some form of undergear is generally essential!!
I got my skirt on ebay - just search for cargo skirt and there will be loads to choose from. Generally they are around £1-£3 + postage which is around £2.50

On sizes, Ladies 12 is approx waist size 32, 14 is waist 34 etc.

I always liked the idea of a 'combat skirt' for cycling and then for off-bike wearing. I could hide my lycra shorts underneath it and everything, and it might look just grrr enough to get away with wearing my cycling shoes too. Maninaskirt, where did you find yours?

SRD - It seems to be a cultural thing or an unspoken taboo about men wearing skirts. Labelled cross-dressers. By the same token, should women who wear trousers/suits not also be cross-dressers?

As you say, many cultures only have men in skirts. In Scotland the kilt is the only acceptable one a man can wear - unless that can be changed by just going for it!

Skirts are a bit tricky for cycling in (especially when short!) but I have a 17" khaki, cargo skirt which is in fact ideal for the bike. Deep pockets for keys, phone and money. I'm sure there is a market for it!

When I worked as a lab rat a few years back there was a visiting lecturer in his 70s who used to knock about the staff common room occasionally, with corresponding long white beard and flowing locks who wore a tweed skirt suit complete with tights.

Apparently he just got bored of trousers one day and fancied a change and never reverted back to longs.

You would be unlikely to guess what I work as - so I'll tell you - I am a Structural Engineer. Stuffy dark suits, white shirts, collars and ties - the works! Think I needed a relaxing change of clothes!

I wear shorts most of my free time - quite often
"unfashionably" short shorts, especially in summer. Only first tried wearing a skirt last year though after seeing various websites saying it is catching on. So thought I would see what reaction there would be, and surprisingly there has been very little reaction at all, and any reaction is limited to a second look "Did I really see that?"

This year I was on a 10-mile charity walk for Breast Cancer, and wore the denim miniskirt then. Everyone who noticed it gave me a thumbs-up saying "Cool!" or "Wow!" which was great. I think I might be doing it again next year!

Good to hear all your comments.

maninaskirt - good for you. brave too, but in lots of other cultures men wear skirts, no idea why the west (esp scotland of all places) finds it so alien. Well, i know, but it is obviously just cultural/historical construction. Curious to know what field you work in though, as I would expect lots of people would worry about 'perceptions'. Personally, i like 'skorts'-- shorts that look like skirts. Skirts are nice in warm weather, though, but sometimes tricky to cycle in.

Even if it WAS 'closed' there are a lot of people registered AND this is the internet.

maninaskirt raises a point we should be aware of about our wee forum - it is pretty open (I previously thought closed but man I know in Barra claimed he tracked me down bragging on internet about ex-girlfriends. Slight exaggeration of me and weefolds going down memory lane which should have been PM but shows that the forum is wide open). Dominic Langan from Madison also found us without difficulty.

didn't see said offender in minskirt, but did clock a chap on a road bike with oversize Mountie hat and camoulaged combats on. Must have been for their well known aerodynamic properties.
