@gembo - not now because I threw away the original, but if it gets too annoying then I'm sure chdot will delete it.

@mkns - yup. It's a very dark grey in the daylight shot.

@wfb - your second theory is correct. I'm not clever enough to do the former. You'll note the drink bottle disappears at night...

Hmmm… looking again the position of the hasp varies so perhaps it was photographed again at night.

Mainly as an excuse to learn how to create an annoying animated GIF using the GIMP, I present this:

It shows how well the black Scotchlite tape I bought from Amazon glows white in a bright light. It's almost, but not quite, as bright as normal silver Scotchlite. In daylight it's black, but with an occasional odd silvery glimmer as it reflects sunlight...

Other colours are available, but the black currently isn't in stock on Amazon.

Is it the stuff that is encapsulated in a sort of vinyl protective layer?

@Nelly - seach on fleabay for the tape in "Gold", not "Yellow". Looks a much closer match to your ride.

OK, I 'may' be about to ask the CCE Silly Question of 2013, but here goes -

My commuting ride is Yellow, i.e.

and although I have excellent lights, spoke reflectors etc, I would like to put some reflective material on the frame - without making it too ugly - and I am fairly sure that any reflecto yellow as detailed in Insto's otherwise useful link will be a different shade.

So, my silly question is this - similar to Arrelcats 'Black' reflective, can you get 'Clear' tape which then turns reflective ?

I may also soon be able to offer free childsize brickie's vests to any takers. Sized for primary 1s, can be squeezed into by P3s. No longer needed at work.

We'll try to find a home among local schools and nurseries first, but if there's no takers I'll nab them.

The lettering on her red torpedo is of this ilk.

Indeed. I've been using black reflective vinyl for years. The 3M stuff is best; I've also used cheap stuff from the 'Bay that looks blacker, but it reflects murky yellow rather than 3M's almost-white.

Laid Back found a local supplier of the black vinyl for the torpedo. I don't know if it's pukka 3M but it's still superb.

I got a Buff with retro reflective tape in Go Outdoors. It comes in yellow or black… no prizes for guessing which I got.

Looks like you can get other colours from Buff's web page:

I think Arellcat knows more about sourcing it than I, but there is a retroreflective which is black if you're not at the magic angle, and just as eerily fierce when you are.

Good point about the ass rub. Could put it along the zip line, which is much less abraded.

And the normal piping. Next time I'm in a haberdashery (or on eBay) I'll have a look for some.

But not the light pocket. I'm none too fussed about the safety risk of melting motorists' corneas. In any case, I thought the basic premise of it - that motorists don't go around with their full beam or fog lamps on - slightly missed the point that many do, at the slightest drop in visibility, brighten their lights. So, being in a permanent state of diminished visibility, I'll go for bright lights and positive, bordering on aggressive, road positioning.

"...and a daisy chain across the front that a light can be attached to."

Not a special flap-covered light pocket, perhaps with a semi-transparent membrane option for when you're out and about with the L&M vis180 but don't want to make yourself too unsafe?

Normal piping with spoke reflectors clipped on might work, and would allow for easy replacement when the retro-reflectivity is buffed away through bottom-rubbing.

Interesting although still not very purty. It's that whole Sam Brown belt or vest look. I need to get off my butt and make a proper cycling version of my bumbag. I'm thinking just reflective piping along the outside edge and a daisy chain across the front that a light can be attached to.
