I'll wager you were being asked £7.99 postage!

a quid, but why let that get in the way of a good story? :)

So £1.01, all in!

You can struggle to resolve number plates even on 720p "HD" resulotion, especially if you are moving at the time (causes vibration).

If you can afford to go for 1080, worth it.

On to ebay and bought a generic handlebar camera mount point for, I kid you not, £0.01!

Excellent! Recycling for cycling :-)

Incidentally, some of the car alarm keyfob style cameras will fit in Tic Tac boxes, so with a bit of simple DIY you can make a relatively showerproof housing. And now that they are aware that the cameras are being used on bikes, handlebar mounts are available (though not for the Tic Tac boxes!).

Great thread. I've been trying to figure out what camera to get and followed some of the links on here and ended up on a site where someone was using a Kodak waterproof camera.
"Hold on a sec", I thought - "I've got one of these!". Quick rummage around in the cupboard and there it is. Bought it a couple of years ago, used it once. 1.5 hours of video and battery.

On to ebay and bought a generic handlebar camera mount point for, I kid you not, £0.01! So I'm all set with a fully waterproof camera and I'm a penny poorer :)

Glad to be of help :-)

I have to admit, I would never have thought of trying out any of the cameras Matt reviews on Techmoan because they look like toys and, as Matt has said himself, the makers do themselves no favours calling them "spy cameras".

But once you get used to them, you realise just how good they can be. Plus, Matt ends up building up a rapport with some of the manufacturers such that they end up asking him what people want from future versions. We can thank him for almost singlehandedly (with the feedback he gets from comments on his site) getting improved versions of cameras to market.

FYI, I bought my "Jumbo" model from eletoponline365 on eBay, the same as Matt, so I can personally vouch for them. They are also the manufacturer so you're sure of getting the version you are expecting.

Brilliant, thanks chaps. I wasn't planning on getting anything til I saw the Inou price. Now I've seen those videos it looks like I'll be picking up something else I can't really afford! The mobius is tempting me...

Frankly, you'd be better off with this or this unless the GPS feature is important to you.

I currently use this and also own this.

Some of these cameras may not be as flashy or intuitive as the big names, but they are a heck of a lot cheaper and provide good images, certainly good enough to make out number plates, especially from the 1080P resolution models.

I heartily recommend Technomoan's site, a) for the quality of the reviews and b) for Matt's dry Mancunian sense of humour. I find myself watching reviews for things I'm not even interested in buying!

Also note, though the specs say it has a "waterproof design", even the manual states the unit should not be used in the rain.

Got to say that you get what you pay for with video cameras. This is probably worth what it now costs...

With a resolution of 640x480, the pictures will be small and fuzzy.I doubt if you would be able to read a number plate off the video, and that's a priority for me.

When you've got a clear picture of the number plate, you can have much more specific later conversations with vehicle owners or law enforcement...

Cateye Inou Camera £80 down from £200. The only problem I can see is the battery life. Great price though, it'd do the commute
