Yesterday I took a stroll along by the Ladyboys site across the grass then turned toward Newington - all the way with an 8 year old delighted to be out in the rain !

Anyway, my 15 minute survey noted that the area of The Meadows in front of the Tennis courts is in a far worse state than the Ladyboys site.

I conclude that this is due to the semi organised football games played on that part of the park - combined with recent rubbishy weather (see mine above).

How about moving the Ladyboys to Bruntsfield Links - Transgender pitch and putt Golf, that would be a crowdpleaser, no?

Back OT, these events would cause a lot less damage if they didn't install an entire little support village of lorries, trailers, portacabins, portaloos, generators, water tanks and temporary roadways across the grass. Put up the marquee and be done with it, and they can pay to camp some place more suited.

Or council can accept that these events provide useful income and provide hardstandings. But I'm sure that wouldn't go down well with the Friends of the Meadows and Links.

Can't rememeber the name of the 'law' on this, but I'd suggest the heel of a pari of high heels is such a small surface area that the size of the lady (or boy) wearing them is irrelevant to successful aeration.

K: "high heels to a wonderful job of aereating the grass"

So that's why they have ladies days here at the racecourse.

A lot depends on the weather, which we know can be unreliable!

Meadows for 2-3 years was a horrible mess after the ladyboys / fair left - but perhaps unsurprising given the horrible wet drummers we had.

This year - better weather - same site is looking pretty good IMO.

But clearly its not clever to book large events on the basis of 'hope its sunny'.

Naturally enough, the grass dies when something is plonked on top of it and obscures the daylight for a month. While I understand that the council has been charging the relevant parties for the cost of reinstatement of new turf (for the last couple of years), it seems to take 2 or 3 months for the council to actually get the reinstatement work done on the Meadows. In Princes St gardens after the winter festival last year, it took even longer and looked like a ploughed field for ages.

I think the presence of shows in the various parks is great, per se, but the shows that stay for weeks at a time cause heavy damage to the local environment. On balance, I'd rather not have those shows.

I think we'll survive without the Lady Boys of Bangkok appearing at the Fringe yet again.
