I think The Herald's paywall keeps the worst of the commenters out.

The herald's news coverage of this at least as bad as scotsman though.

There are more cafés and bars in that stretch of George street that will benefit than there are businesses that might be negatively affected. It's only 2 blocks for goodness sake. Hey ho. The Herald is a much better paper than Scotsman/Evening news, which is why their commentators tend to be more lucid, and properly identified.

There seems to be some sort of perverse logic at work that admits that the trial might be a success and make George Street a nice place to go, and that will be a bad thing because it will mean more people will drive in to town to experience the joys of George Street and therefore the best thing to go would be to have it as the unfriendly, polluted and ugly 3 lane carpark that it currently is. At least that would discourage potential visitors, which would be good for business.

Erm. Whatever!

Let's not wait and see! Can't a couple of competent cyclists who are familiar with the area arrange to speak to the designers, to look at plans on paper, to walk over the street and discuss the issues?

Shouldn't "we" (cyclists) be more proactive and approach the Council to help rather than to sit back and criticise?

Let's wait and see. Can't say I'll be using it much myself, as I would need to brave Picardy Place roundabout to get there (or from Princes Street turn right across tramlines at St Andrew Square). However it is positive the council is trying it.

The council have still failed to come up with a plan to link the "dedicated two way bike lane" to any other infrastructure at either end. One of the consequences of this will be that a year after it is put it, it will get branded a failure if it doesn't get a massive increase in cycle traffic, which it won’t as it is an isolated bit of infrastructure which is not on the way to anywhere...

Do you think we've been all cynic-ed out, what with Leith Walk, the Cycling Inaction Plan and the Low Quality Bike Corridor? I meant to post my friend's comment from Facebook which was to the effect that it would be good if it was good but not if it turned out to be a collection of ASLs and "cyclist dismount" signs...

A major traffic shake up is to be piloted in Edinburgh city centre to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

George Street is to have a one way system for vehicles, and a dedicated two way bike lane.

On street car parking is being reviewed, and the frequency of buses on Princes street will be reduced.

The city council has approved a 12 month trial starting next year.
