This was posted on another thread more than a year ago -

"The racks seem to be permanently full, even at 7.15 in the morning."

I did see a 'has this bike been abandoned?' notice on one bike, so RailTrack is trying to free up some space.

I'm not sure what the platform numbers are but if you head down either ramp from Waverly Bridge, head past the old victorian stone building where the ticket office is, and behind it to to platforms which go through the station. In the middle of these is the bike parking. If you head on to platform 2 its barred at the far end. Bast off to walk round the north side of the building.

"I'm not sure how up to date it is"

Not for platform 11.

We had 'allowed enough time' to park bikes, but plat3 is a long walk to the main bit of station!

I'm sure it'll all be fine in 2013 - and there'll be twice as much bike parking...

(Less chance of twice as much capacity ON trains.)

I can never keep track of where the bicycle parking is at Waverley. Most of it was miles away by platforms 2 and 3, and then it was at 11 and 3. There was a little bit by the access to 3 but you had to ask the ground staff nicely to get through.

National Rail has a map of the concourse with lots of annoying pop-up images, but I'm not sure how up to date it is.

Left bIkes at Waverley yesterday for a trip to Glasgow.

All bike parking seems to be around Platform 3 (near Calton Road steps).

Pretty full too - must be a lot of weekday commuters who leave them over w/e.

I've just been to have a look at the new racks at Waverley. It's the Josta doubleparker. It's German engineering and good enough for Euston Station and Portland State University. If you can lift your bike, you can lift your bike onto the upper deck of the rack.

Actually, I was pretty impressed with it. The upper deck telescopes out to clear the bike below, and then hinges downwards to about a foot off the ground. There is a pair of automatically locking pegs that grab onto the rim as the wheel passes over. Nothing fancy or complicated, but it's effective. There is a spring-loaded long, thin n-shaped hoop at the far end for a wheel to locate in, although it's better than a wheelbender. The hoop only moves two or three inches.

When I was at Waverley, there was one bike with a child seat on the back, which prevented the rack immediately above from being used, as the seat got in the way. I tested the ground and upper racks with my shortest recumbent bike, and I couldn't get it to lock safely into the upper rack, whichever way round I parked my bike. The thin hoop wouldn't move far enough for my back wheel (or my front) to engage the little hooks. I could however put my bike on the ground rack fairly securely.

There's a great big narrow hoop that's hinged roughly below a bike's cranks, so there's plenty of scope to pass a U-lock through the frame and back wheel. Folding bikes ought to fit fine on top, but most recumbents probably won't owing to their longer wheelbase ... mind you, who leaves a fancy recumbent parked at Waverley for longer than it takes to buy train tickets?

My only question is -- is it designed for 6 foot blokes, or can short female types like me manage it. BUt very good to see they are doing something, and investing in it. Now, what about Haymarket which needs more/better racks much worse than Waverley??!!

"the 2 layers are offset."

I'm sure it all works fine and probably allows about 50% more bikes in the same 'footprint'.

There'll be a catalogue somewhere.

Next person who goes to Waverley should look to see if there is a maker's name.

not sure, if people park back wheen to wall at the bottom there will be a lot of handle bars getting in the way of any offset positioning unless they sacrifice more horizontal space to make way for bikes coming down, in which case making the extra spaces up top cost more spaces down low for this... I would have to see it up close to judge

spytfyre - I'd hope that would be somehting the designers would have thought of. I'd imagine that the top row is slightly offset compared to the bottom row.

GREAT

There are some at Glasgow Central.

I presume these replace the Shefffield racks so not completely new capacity.

Presumably much more expensive than normal racks so it's good that they (RailTrack?) are keen to encourage cycle/train commuting.

I spotted some new double layer bike parking in Waverley Station yesterday morning when I was heading down to London. There are 2 sets of 40 spaces each so a total of 80 spaces. Which should make life much easier.
