Some of the suggestions on the "Quietest" seem bizarre - making right-turns off very busy fast roads to avoid a few hundred yards of straight, when you'd be on the same busy road for miles and miles elsewhere.<br /> If you prefer the "Balanced" route instead of NCN1, then through Dalkeith/Woodburn there is another option of a shared footway/cycleway to the east of Cowden Road as far as the A6106. Also the footway on east side of the B6482 from just north of Easthouses Way southwards has been widened for shared use. To Innerleithen via the Granites is far preferable to the 703. Hillier, granted, but far fewer fastcardriving types.
