+1 for B7007/B709 (NCN1) instead of A703.
The Cyclestreets "Quietest" route may have some very quiet sections on it but using the A701 and A703 to get between them would outweigh any benefit. Some of the suggestions on the "Quietest" seem bizarre - making right-turns off very busy fast roads to avoid a few hundred yards of straight, when you'd be on the same busy road for miles and miles elsewhere.
If you prefer the "Balanced" route instead of NCN1, then through Dalkeith/Woodburn there is another option of a shared footway/cycleway to the east of Cowden Road as far as the A6106. Also the footway on east side of the B6482 from just north of Easthouses Way southwards has been widened for shared use. This would avoid turning right along Easthouses Road (where it leaves the B6482) and then the turning right from Suttieslea Road onto Crawlees Road (as you would be going down Suttieslea Road from the top and turning left instead).

Seconded. To Innerleithen via the Granites is far preferable to the 703. Hillier, granted, but far fewer fastcardriving types. More wildlife too although on today's evidence a lot of wilddeath, mainly in the form of rabbits and toads, especially near Heriot Water.

To get to Innerleithen perhaps try following the route of the NCN1 via Carrington?

In the absence of an off-road former-railway route from Roslin to Peeble, what would be deemed a sensible way to get from Edinburgh to Traquair on a weekend in the middle of May?

I know of the former railway between Peeble and Innerleithen through Horrible Golfhamletby for the last bit but the Balanced option on Cyclestreets contains lots of roads that only render upon zooming-in (when they have a dashed border), though it goes via Gorebridge which was the way I was thinking about looking at. Quietest and Fastest options are both basically just the A703, which I'm fine with going on but which will result in having hands wrung at me by the non- or rarely-cycling drivers I'll be cycling to meet.

Good stuff, Morningsider!

Wasn't our very own DaveC cycling through the Borders (including Peebles) and Midlothian with some Sustrans types a few weeks back? Did they not traverse some disused railway tracks? Was the proposed C2C/F2F route related to the Roslin/Peebles project?

Ideal for funding under KB's 'exemplar cycling project' notion.

Could it be finished before Leith Walk??

Commuting, tourism, local connections etc. etc.

High Quality necessary.

This is a proposal by SUSTRANS that was approved by both Midlothian and Scottish Borders Councils. SUSTRANS has used a loophole in planning legsilation to extend the planning permission indefinately, i.e. initiated development by digging a trial pit on site and then filling it in again - legally the development has now started and, as neither council put a completion date on the planning permission, SUSTRANS effectively has forever to complete the development.

Perhaps someone would like to ask SUSTRANS for an update on this.

EDIT - should say that the extension of planning permission applies only to the Midlothian section, the Scottish Borders planning permission doesn't expire until July 2014.

Planning permission was granted for these but work had to start within three years. I don't know if it did - that time limit has been passed now.
