Is there a similar no entry except ... sign for traffic coming from the west?

What, the one saying "except trams, buses, taxis and CYCLES"? That one?

Isn't that part of the problem? When is a no entry sign not a no entry sign?

There's a reason why a no entry sign is red with a white bar across it, rather than just the words "no entry": they don't expect you to be able to read the words from a distance.

The words of the "except trams... etc" sign are small.

As cyclists, we're moving around on the saddle, rather than strapped to a seat.

By the time we're able to read that sign - which assumes we're not looking at the road to avoid potholes etc - it can be too late to realise we need to adjust, to look over our shoulders to see if it's safe to change lanes etc.

Maybe they need a different sign - one that graphically indicates whether we can cycle through it.

PS Even the big no entry signs are being missed by drivers - the ones who drive through them because their sat navs say this is the correct route.

From the BBC article:

Officers said one of the main issues they found was the numbers of drivers and cyclists failing to observe "no entry" signs, particularly in Shandwick Place.

Would that be this sign from the Scotsman article on the same issue?

Jon Snow's points were valid enough, but some of his cycling during the video didn't look all that safe...

In relation to the Edinburgh article, I found a police car stopped half-way into the ASZ opposite the King's Theatre last night as I filtered into it. There was a car stopped beyond the ASZ too, waiting to turn right, so presumably the policeman didn't feel that bad about his position in comparison. Roll on pantomime season.

I suppose a FOI request about the number of ASL fines (3 points or cash) would get a reply that they don't keep that stat.

Which bit?

"

Jim Orr, Edinburgh City Council's vice convener for transport, said: "A lot of work goes into encouraging cyclists to use the centre of Edinburgh, and these areas at traffic lights can make drivers more aware that they need to keep some distance between them and bikes.
