It was an excellent listen. Nice to hear the housebuilding and architecture industry laying the blame for dull housing culs-de-sac built around human unfriendly networks of distributor roads at the door of poor traffic planning in the 70s and 80s. Fascinating to hear that the requirement to turn a bin lorry in a cul-de-sac is one of the main reasons housing estates are planned like they are.

I'm not convinced that most recent design is as good as the presenter was making out - largely it still often feels designed around the car.

Well that was the gist of JG's trailer for this - he mentioned 'designed for cars' (R4 9:00)

"
Jonathan Glancey investigates the forces that shape the design of our everyday buildings, and how this could be improved.
In this episode, he finds out how we lost the art of designing beautiful places - and how it is being rediscovered.

"

And later on iplayer
