There are Sheffield stands too but they might be under the Stuff at the moment.
The old Sheffield stands opposite Ryries are still there and still in use.

thanks fimm (hmmm, this time auto-correc went for 'film').

I've had trouble locking the folder before - I'll just fold it and take it if need be.

Yes.
There's still Stuff Being Done to the new Haymarket racks, but you can get in and use them.

Having investigated the ones at Livingston North, I'm somewhat unimpressed by the thing I assume you are supposed to lock your bike to, which would be OK if you had a fairly long cable but is entirely useless if you have a D lock.

Make sure that if you give one of the upper trays a good yank, it doesn't extend all the way under its own weight. If it hits the hard stop with a bang it can cause adjacent trays to start to extend by themselves.

I've seen this happen at Caledonian Uni in Glasgow and there's a risk of being hit on the head if you pull a tray and then bend down to your bag (or whatever).

The bike racks still have orange barriers next to them, but one enterprising cyclist had locked their bike up anyway.
Similar two-tier racks have appeared at Livingston North. I guessed that bike racks were going in, but am surprised at the amount of capacity. (If they think that anyone is going to leave even a beater bike there overnight, they are in for a shock...)

Re-reading the thread, I note that two years ago I said:
" It will be interesting to see if most people who come from that side then go in through the old building or go round to the new doors (I should probably do the latter, with the bike)."

Actually I always go in and out through the old building (except on the odd occasion when I want to go one way or the other along Haymarket Terrace).

New racks have been under construction for a while:

According to Jimmy the Big Issue seller, they don't have the concrete bits yet. They are coming from Japan??? and won't be here till May. Jimmy jokes that the racks won't be open until they have the concrete for "Health and Safely" reasons. I fear that many a true word is spoken in jest...

They (Network Rail, I think) are adding a second tier of covered racks infront of the existing this month, according to tweets from them telling people to remove any abandoned bikes this month before the work.

Also in the Spring a big programme of city centre bike parking.

As hinted at in the article, to meet the government target/aspirations/wishful thinking of 10% of journeys by bike would require 10% * 2,000,000 /365 = 548 bike racks!

Passenger numbers for 2012/13 and 11/12 at haymarket were just over 2million according to Wikipedia. And I know there would be higher usage during the week, but this gives another indication of just how far we are from 10% of journeys by bike, given that there are only spaces for 34. So we need at least 16x Moreau!

I never got any cake :-(

I suppose at some point one of those useful signs that tell you about taxi ranks, bus stops and other such things will appear. There must be a rule that every station must have one - I have a photo of the one at Corrour Station on Rannoch Moor, which doesn't have a road, let alone a bus stop or a taxi rank...

There are a couple of temporary yellow polystyrene signs stating "TAXI STANCE" (one pointing west from the existing jughandle, one pointing right from just across the other side of the road) but they would seem to be pointing towards the tram stop. Half the barrier is missing from the east end of it, too. They wouldn't be using the tram stop as a temporary taxi rank, would they?

Only four taxis in the jughandle today, too.

Didn't spot the escalators today, did find the new ticket machines confusing and awkward, did fit the bike into the surprisingly spacious lift with no problems at all.
As to whether to ride from Dalry Rd to the entrance or walk, probably depends on the number of pedestrians at the time :-)

@crowriver that's interesting. I was assuming I'd have to stick to the stairs with my bike (no big deal, that's what I do anyway).

will cyclists get away with taking their bikes on the new escalators?

I do it all the time at Waverley to get to platform 20. No problems so far. The alternative is a very convoluted series of lift journeys starting at the old taxi rank near platform 10 or lugging up the stairs on the other side of the old ticket hall. So escalator it is.
