I seem to recall back during the Cold War (Remember that? If too young the Beeb have a Cold War season on just now so you can gen up if you want) there was much talk of the use of thermonuclear warheads detonated high in the atmosphere above a target country or battlefield location which would send an electromagnetic pulse through the air, knocking out most electrical devices including communications, engine starter motors, etc.

This pulse gun thing seems like a less radioactive and more localised version of the same idea.

Of course that's obviously a prototype. No doubt miniaturisation will end up in a more portable device. But even as it is, it would fit in the back of a Range Rover-sized pursuit vehicle (or something else for the military).

I'm sure there'd be all sorts of legislation about how and when it would be permitted in a police pursuit, just as the use of Stingers and TPAC manoeuvres have to be authorised before use.

Given the size of the device, I think it it would be more effective at stopping cars if you plonked it in the middle of the road.

Or...

Yeah! Let's use something that will sell in the antiques market like a vintage car! Even better, the vintage car will never reach dangerous speeds and be slow and someone might not even be able to drive one as the controls weren't standard! Excellent!

Heh. I hadn't realised how big the thing was. It is a nice dream, though, being able to bring an offending car to a grinding halt...

(When I get home I'm going to post a silly message on Facebook to my friend, who has a 1970s Land Rover, about this - something about his vehicle being in demand as a getaway car or something...)

Yeah! Let's use something that will kill the power assisted braking and steering of a car! Even better, the car will suddenly slow and someone might go straight into the back of them! Excellent!

Not exactly portable is it!! I can imagine one on the back of Dave's Y trailer but then you'd need the 3.5kVA gene on another trailer just to power it!

I like this. I imagine though that drivers will see it roughly the same as putting a bag over their heads and dragging them off to Guantanimo.

"SWITCH OFF MY CAR. NOONE TOUCHES MY CAR"

Suppose it might make my bike computer a bit confused...

This could go under "Stuff" I suppose, but come on, who wouldn't want one of these on their bikes to literally stop dangerous and inconsiderate drivers in their tracks? ;-)
