Cheers all - Sounds like I should just hang fire for now if arellcats experience is the norm. Gembo, laptop is a 13 inch one so fits no problem even with shirt and undies packed.

For waterproof inner bags I recommend Alpkit Cheap and cheerful. Buy 3!

My Carradice Super C panniers are about eight years old (so barely run in yet) and are still waterproof.

I wouldn't worry too much about it until they're at least ten.

Drop a hint that you would like a waterproof sleeve for your laptop, surely this exists, yes a fifteen inch dry bag
Available on amazon currently for twenty quid, aqua quest brand. You know, for christmas

Ortliebs are waterproof but some dampness seeps in eventually, maybe the carradice less prone to this as doesn't end up on the ground with wee stones puncturing the cordura?

The saddlebag in your picture looks proofed. How big is the laptop? Also the oilcloth similar to stuff we used to have, but we now have red one with White spots

If it is still waterproof, I'd not worry until it ceases to be so: likely to be a few years yet, I'll wager.

With solid waxes I was once advised to warm it until melted and then sponge it on to the garment, prior to hairdryering. This worked well.
+1 for the various Nikwax products too ...I use the TX spray on everything from my ski jacket to tent seams.

I've used Nikwax Tech Wash with excellent results on waterproof jackets, I believe it would be suitable for this as well - though be prepared as however dirty you think it is, it's nothing compared to the filth that Nikwax can get out. It will likely feel half the weight and look brand sparkling new afterwards.

They also make various reproofing liquids - this one for cotton, and there are others for down/goretex etc. Again very highly recommended by me, it restored the waterproofing on what I assumed was a dead jacket to nearly new.

I've reproofed mine as it's about 10 years old. I found as the reproofing wax is fairly solid it's hard to get even coverage even if you use a hairdryer. It looked a bit patchy when finished but faded back to an even colour after a month or so.

So, my Camper is 2 (maybe 3) years old now, and while I have had no problems at all, I wonder if it is time to consider reproofing the bag. I take a laptop to/from work and really dont want it getting wet !

I had always thought the cotton duck was considered waterproof, and dont want to (a) mess with it if I dont have to and (b) change the colour if I wax it badly

Anyone done it, or is it entirely pointless until it is about 20 years old !
