I picked up one of these from TK Maxx a little while ago. Proving to have more than enough space for laptop, book, shoes, full suit, towel, lunch, tool kit.

http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=11371

Can confirm that when it's not being abused for carting stuff to and from the office, it carries £25 worth of yummy beer from Cork & Cask very well too and I can pack a week's worth of clothes plus shoes in comfortably.

For the days when panniers aren't an option, I recently bought a North Face SurgeII. 32 litres...holds a lot if it has to, but the compression straps keep it compact.
Previously had the slightly smaller 29 litre Borealis.

VauDe, emphasising Albrecht von Dewitz. Gembo is right on the two-syllable pronunciaton, fœdə I think. And yes, I was a mechanic there once upon a time.

German, so V pronounced F, as in Folksvagen. Seen it written VauDe, too.
Mine was an Apache according to the tiny tag hiding in the laptop compartment, but was bought about five years ago so may well have been superseded several times.

@trycycle

Both are made by Vaude but Arellcat's rucksack has the EBC brand. I think she used to be a mechanic there but I might have tht wrong, Point is not they are EBC but that they are vaude.

I have EBC panniers made by vaude they have lasted one year with one repair. Vaude good brand.

I believe vaude is pronounced Fouw Duh? That is how chap in E BC Was. Saying it,

Thanks for the replies!

that's looks perfect wingpig, what model is? is it the one Arellcat posted, although his does appear to have the aeroflex? can manage without aeroflex, I'd prefer the extra capacity over a non-sweaty back!

I'll try and find out the designation of this other Vaude bag. Carries a 15.4W laptop plus shoes plus flask plus loads of other things. Doesn't have the Aeroflex back but has chest and waist straps. Can slightly obscure over-the-shoulder views when really heavily packed.

The EBC's rucksacks are pretty good, being made by Vaude. I've had a lot of mileage out of my 'Revolution Rucsac' from 2004, but the current range only goes up to 15 litres with the Stow Team. The Aeroflex shape does make for a comfortable fit and good in summer, but the curved shape is less helpful for large flat things like laptops and foolscap binders.

Shoes go in the mesh side pockets, and can be kept dry with a waterproof cover.

Alternatively, treat yourself and buy an Arkel Bug.

Any recommendations for a rucksack for commuting?

needs to have enough room for the usual - laptop, change of clothes, towel and shoes (size 12s which can be a squeeze for some rucksacks).

I have panniers but sometimes a rucksack is handier depending on what I have to do post-ride!

Looking for something like this, but no real indication of capacity.
