Well the phone call bit you can get round with a £20 phone from Argos on PAYG.

ITV4 show Kojak during the day. One of the things my boys find funny is that the cops use pay phones to call the station.

@wfb, my favoured route planning/navigating solution, but unfortunately somewhat limited in it's use for making telephone calls, taking photographs or playing on the internet ;-)

It does look like a handy thing. Only running Android 4.1 though: 4.2.2 or even 4.3 would be better. Camera looks pretty decent really for a multi-function device.

IME the ability to install/move apps to the SD card is governed by the app code/permissions itself. Some can be moved, some can't.

If it's mainly for GPS track recording, one could just buy a cheap Android smartphone like this and bung it in a wateerproof ziplock phone bag?

I have a Garmin Oregon and an eTrex 20, both have survived full soakings on my handlebars.

Thanks both. Garmin 500 duly ordered. Hopefully that will be better at surviving the deluge.

My 500 works fine in awful weather. Unlike my wired Cateye computer - its connectors quickly get upset.

This morning's extremely damp commute appears to have killed my Blackberry ;-(

Over the past year I've been using an app on it to record my trips. Despite having been soaked a fair few times (although less often than you might imagine), this is the first time it's given up the ghost.

These Garmin type things ... exactly how waterproof are they? If, say, one of these was stuck on your handlebars for an hour plus of steady, heavy rain, would it still work?

GSM Arena: Quechua announces a rugged 5" smartphone

Outdoors Magic: Quechua's New 'Mountain Proof' Smartphone

Pretty reasonable spec when you consider the claimed ruggedness of the phone. Large screen but at the same time the screen is likely to be the weak point as far as potential damage is concerned. The camera is a bit under-specced at 5MP (if a camera is important to you). Expandable storage is always a bonus but it's worth checking if the phone allows apps to be installed on the memory card or not, otherwise (as with my Samsung SIII) it's not quite as versatile as it might seem, though you can of cours store photos, videos, music etc on it.

I'd probably wait for TechRadar or Trusted Reviews to do a review.

cool! sounds like what i need.

One of the phone companies is now selling a phone here that was previously only made for their African market. I was quite taken with the idea until I found out the camera was quite poor.

Just saw this mentioned on facebook:
http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/outdoors-news/quechuas-new-mountain-proof-smartphone/11937.html

http://www.decathlon.co.uk/quechua-phone-5-id_8294081.html#avantages

Anyone know if these are worthwhile? Or are there better smartphone alternatives for those looking for something a bit robust and water resistant/proof? I'm assuming it's not contract but buy and add your own sim... but then I am famously dim around smartphones!
