One of an increasing number of cycling related stories on the BBC website designed to stir up antagonism, or, as they would probably put it, to 'foster debate'. There was another one yesterday.

I thought I would put my wee rant on the facebook one!

Educating the growing minority of stupid people that think that because 'cyclists pay no road tax' they should not be on the road. The police could start clamping down on folk who don't give way to bikes and just pull out onto the main road, overtake when it isn't safe to to so and ignore cyclist safety zones. Also councils have to start maintaining the roads properly and stop wrecking cycle paths by putting chicanes and ther obstacles on them. I have stopped using a cycle path in Edinburgh as I'm safer on the road. Just before any numpty starts on a car v bike rant, I also drive and passed my test in 1987 (and yes I pay road tax/VED!).

Yeah, I saw this the other day.

Many of the suggestions from 'the readers' seem to take the approach of 'protect cyclists from themselves' or even 'protect us from cyclists'.

Not so much radical as knee-jerk reactionary stuff, much of it: compulsory hi-viz, cycle proficiency, ban nearside overtaking, respect each other (Nice Way Code anyone?). Agree that there were bolder suggestions from the journalists in the original feature, including a city centre motor vehicle ban.

The bbc news magazine has been running a feature, apologies if this has already appeared in previous discussions and I am late to it. One has as it was ban headphones.

Any roads

Google

Radical suggestions to protect cyclists

and you will get the variety of suggestions from 20.11.13.

The first 8 were a bit more radical but there is nothing we haven't discussed. What I like is that the headline remains suggestions to PROTECT cyclists
