Yes I see it now, the tow I mean. Funny that I've had to wait 30 years to see any footage of the event, it happened on my doorstep at the time but I've only read about it until now.

A big of googling has returned fhe following interview with Dave LG, includes a photie of the Geoffrey Butler that he used on the day. Compare and contrast the tyres and brakes to what Guy Martin is using.
Looks like a tow on this vid, to be fair I'd be surprised if that SD1 wasn't capable of well over 110mph even with the crazy fairing.
Without a tow I imagine it would take an unfeasibly long length of road to get up to speed and a whole lot of intermediate gears.
Good luck to Martin, the world needs lunatics like him :-)
(and closer to the edge is a film worth watching and then discussing at length, some good points in there, like the engine builder who worries he is like a drug pusher, very interesting stuff)

If I recall correctly from Dave Le Grys' record, the main limiting factor was the car, they'd put such a big fairing on it to provide maximum shelter that its top speed was severely limited. I see that they are using a lorry this time. Not sure that Dave LG was allowed the use of a tow either.

Alright, if you don't count the tow bar, the disc brake and the double chainring, what have the Romans ever done for us?

@Arellcat, the blog post just has a few pictures of the bike. There's nothing about whether he actually has managed to achieve 100mph, or the journey to get there. Really looking forward to the show. And that TT doc is just superb viewing.

@Uberuce, surely no self-respecting hipster would be seen with a disc brake?

I have the DVD of TT3D:Closer to the Edge. Great stuff, even though our hero comes a cropper halfway through.

I'm not clicking the link in WC's post because I don't want to spoil the surprise for myself.

If you overlook the rather glaring exceptions of the double chainring and tow bar, which means you're very good at overlooking things, it's remarkably like a plain old off the peg hipster fixie.

Guy Martin is brilliant value (there's a great Isle of Man TT documentary film where he is very very clearly the star, and has a rather magnificent fiery crash in), and on December 29th on Channel 4 he'll be trying to ride at 100mph.

Rourke Bikes have created a monster. Love it!

The bar at the front of the bike is actually to tow it up to a speed that he can then turn the mahoosive gear.
