Have reported the Longstone Rd pedestrian non-crossing to the Southwest team. I also took photographs this morning.

Between red for eastbound on Longstone Rd and green for westbound, you have three seconds to cross the road. Between red for westbound and green for exiting Kingsknowe Rd, you have about eight seconds. And that's if you've stood there and measured it in advance.

Another one for you, SRD. This morning I discovered they're digging up the road at the junction of Longstone Road and Kingsknowe Road North, and they've put in temporary traffic lights.

The pedestrian crossing at this precise point is not coned off, but the crossing signals are disabled. I watched, while waiting at my red light, as a pedestrian tried to get across the road but couldn't because the other continuous flow of traffic on Longstone Rd had the green. Luckily there was about a three second gap between theirs turning red and mine turning green, and the man dashed across the road. Heaven help if he was less able.

Of course, this is a crossing that is designed to help parents and children get to Redhall School, Longstone Primary School, and in the other direction, to Scallywags' nursery just up from the junction.

Not good enough, CEC and sundry roadmenders.

@fimm I asked about both the crossings on slateford road and got this reply - you were right and i was wrong (sort of):

Neither crossing is linked to the adjacent junction timings, they are simply responsive to the depression of the buttons.

The Water of Leith Centre Crossing used to be linked wirelessly to the junction at Inglis Green Road, but following an RTA, the associated aerial necessary for linking was not reinstated.

The crossing at Allan Park Road is too old to be linked and would need a total refurbishment.

I think this crossing is one where (at peak times anyway) where the button has nothing but a placebo effect. Like the crossing at Saughton Road / Saughton Road North, the pedestrian phase is slotted in a pre-determined place in the long vehicle phases. You simply have to wait your place in the cycle of things and all pressing the button does is give you a comforting glow of the "WAIT" light.

Yes, it appears yesterday was an aberration. This morning the lights took 10 and 20 seconds respectively, hardly a long wait but they only changed when all the vehicles (motor I expect) had cleared the junction. So no cars were halted prior to the lights changing and only a few were stopped during the pedestrian phase. Much like everything else at the Gyle motor vehicles are still prioritised by these lights.

I've taken to turning right onto South Gyle Access (Northbound) from the island in between phases. You have to get a good blast-off though as very quickly you've got 2 lanes of traffic from Bankhead Drive bearing down on you at 40mph from behind.

In defence of the council they've fixed the sth Gyle Access ped crossings and for the first time ever they triggered as soon as I pressed the button. I was standing there with my stop watch waiting to time the wait as in the past I've waited an age for them.

So the council have properly fixed the crossing, I expect its and accident, don't tell them.

Hmmm. Interesting. I cross there off-peak and haven't noticed a connection to the nearby junction lights (though I don't always press to cross, given that I'm out for a run, if I can get across quickly I will do!). I'll try to remember to experiment...

One crossing that is definitely linked to nearby junction lights is the one on Slateford Road just west of the Robertson Avenue junction. You can wait for ages for that one to change. Once it has changed, it does have a really long green phase!!

Edited to add that the Robertson Avenue junction itself only has a pedestrian phase to cross Robertson Avenue: if you want to cross Slateford Road you either have the crossing above or the one at the lights near Taste Good.

Thanks fimm. A good example of a crossing that I suspect is a 'dummy' - ie the lights changing has more to do with phase at adjacent junction, rather than whether not a button's been pushed.
