Went to see it on a late night show with the memsahib when it came out. She didn't like it then and doesn't like it now.

Even then I thought it was great from soup to nuts but, as mentioned above, watching it again points up wee things like how the Dude picks up phrases from other people and uses them later in the film.

But sometimes there's a man, sometimes, there's a man. Aw. I lost my train of thought here. But... aw, hell. I've done introduced him enough.

theres a great programme on Radio 6 tomorrow about T Bone Burnett, who works with the Coen Brothers and did various soundtracks, the adverts for this do sound like its unmissable.

He is one cool dude. RJ

Am with PS. it came out I think six months after my first daughter was born Nd it was my first night out with her mum since the Simpsons maternity. This does elevate it, but I had it on video, yes video, and also the cd of the soundtrack which is good.

As PS says, there are a lot if ins and a lot of outs

I can't think of any of the actors putting a foot wrong. Even small parts like the dude's landlord who invites the dude to his one man ballet thing and the dude gives him notes on the performance in a kindly way.

Maybe Mr WC went in with sky high expectations?

I guess it is ok not to like it.

coens have made some great movies.as well as the big Lebowski - raising Arizona, millers crossing, Fargo, oh brother and True Grit

They have made some that are not so good.

@WC For me, The Big Lebowski is one of those films that gets better the more times you see it - there are so many themes and details that you don't pick up on in the first viewing. And I say this as someone who really enjoyed it the first time I saw it.

Crucially, it features a number of likeable characters whom I am happy to spend time with. The Coens seem to have moved away from those of late - I saw the critically acclaimed Inside Llewyn Davis this week and just didn't like anyone in it, which reduced my enjoyment of the Coens' undoubtedly technical dexterity and skill to some extent.

"The Big Lebowski"

Don't judge me, but I really didn't like that film the first time I saw it. Maybe I need to try again.

Actually, truth be told, I found Fargo a little plodding, and No Country for Old Men utterly dull.

O Brother Where art Thou? was good though.

Since Xmas I have encountered numerous cars where the driver is called Smokey and he/she is over the line, sometimes half the vehicle in their efforts to turn right at various junctions. This pushes the cyclists well out into the road. Not sure why I am sensitive to this bad driving but might be linked to my now obsessive desire to ensure my wheel is always behind the line at every junction
