The key differentiator is that you are born of a certain race and can't change it, whereas people can and do give up cycling.</p> <p>I'm offered casual violence in the street by strangers on a regular basis, due to my mode of transport, and twice been involved with the police after serious incidents - they weren't even slightly interested, again due to my mode of transport. (I'm basing this on comparable interactions when cycling wasn't involved)</p> <p>Even when the police do proceed, prosecutions often don't seem to happen at all, when they do juries often acquit even the most bare-faced offenders, and when they are forced to hand down a sentence, the judiciary often seem to apply a generous discount for the victim's status as a cyclist.</p> <p>Go to any of the newspaper comments and swap "cyclists" for catholics and you've got plenty of people who'd be hauled up on sectarian hate grounds. If they do it as part of the campaign as they say, fair enough. But if they do it as a follow-up to a complaint, it could very well be taken the wrong way, as here. </p>
