Starting a lottery on how many hours community service this one gets? Will it be similar to Gary McCourt, but without the ban?

Yep place a small, short island on main road, move junction marker line back to provide width for island.

Island needs to be short so that right turn from lane can be made, and left turn also in to lane, needs to swing over into lane facing traffic

Look on the bright side, suspended sentence and 12 month ban is quite severe for such a killing.

See here for ten pages (!) of lenient sentencing reports. The latest: "A short-sighted motorist who was not wearing his glasses when he mowed down and killed a dog-walker on a pedestrian crossing has received 140 hours community service... he could only read a registration plate seven feet away"

"He was just over the line"

Just? What a terrible thing for the defending lawyer to say. Is he trying to say that this was a minor infringement and therefore should not be deemed serious? Sounds like he's shrugging his shoulders and saying "so what? He was just over the line - big deal!".

This is the junction. No need that I can see to be over the white line:

Ah, but given the sheer number of incidents, such a rigorous procedure would doubtless be "too expensive", ie. life is cheap on the roads.

Contrast the reports into rail crashes, impartial, non judgemental, and published with a list of learning points and recommended (ie 'almost mandated'). Reports by Police and insurers into road crashes are not published, and have a pretext of allocating blame & liabilities, and do not clearly list learning points and recommendations (almost mandatory for action).

http://www.spaldingtoday.co.uk/news/latest-news/suspended-sentence-for-driver-after-cyclist-killed-1-5816828

Words fail - driver cuts corner hits and kills cyclist "He came out of nowhere" - pardon me but what would you normally expect driving on the wrong side of the road other than traffic coming towards you?

Then the Police report noted that 50% of drivers cut the corner - and everyone leaves it as that. Where is the roads authority's delivery of their statutory duty for providing a safe road for all users? Why aren't the Police and Coroner making a recommendation for changing the road design - even something as simple as a traffic island to stop drivers cutting the corner?

Clearly with 50% of drivers delivering a hazard with potentially fatal results every time someone is coming the other way... remove the hazard and block the ability to cut the corner.

Just an example but some of the cycling money might be well spent on proper crash investigatons
